Frosty is going to be 5 years old in December this year.  He was fixed when he was a year old.  He has not had an accident in the house for more than 3 years.  Out of nowhere, he pooped and peed in my mom's bedroom last week.  Then, when I got up today, I found that he had pooped in my room.

Nothing in his schedule has changed.  He has not been going for big lengths of time without going outside.  If fact the incident in Mom's room happened less than 10 minutes after he came in from outside.

We are bringing a new puppy home in 2 weeks, but we haven't changed anything in our house that would alert him to that fact that he would be rebelling or anything.

I just can't figure WHY he would suddenly start doing this after years of being house broken?  If he was just peeing everywhere, I would suspect something medical, but pooping?  Anyone have any ideas?

Coccidia?   It's usually asymptomatic in adults, but we had a couple incidents where we came home from work to find Maddie had pooped.  Thought nothing of it because it was solid, but her annual fecal showed positive for coccidia and we put her through a round of treatment, and no accidents since then.   My guess is it may have just given her a sudden urge to go.

Sometimes ours have to go unexpectedly if they eat something fibrous, like bark or grass.  Again, nothing loose, just having to go sooner than usual.

Beth's comment has merit and a stool check is an easy thing to do, especially if you are bringing home a new puppy.

I will go out on a limb.... I think he knows something is going on, does not know exactly what that is, but is getting anxious about it anyhow.  When you've had a dog for a long time ( some more than others ) they can become very in tune with you and pick up on more than you realize.... I would keep an eye on him and give him less freedom in the short run and also for awhile after you get the pup, allowing him to adjust to the new situation.  I'll be curious to see how this plays out.....

Has he had something outside happen to him? Like a run in with another dog, or his favorite pooping spot changed? Something that would have frightened him? Loud noises?

Nope, nothing has happened.  No other dogs, no potty spot changes.  There were fireworks on Thursday, but the first incident was before that.
