Really bad allergies
Hi all,
Milo - our almost 3 year old red and white corgi is suffering from allergies. First, the Vet gave him steroids, anitbiotics, and a steriod shot. I know steroids aren't good for them but he had to take them. After 1 month on the drugs, he still has problems. His ears get red, he gnaws after his hind legs and armpits, and his skin started some "rash" like spots.
So the vet told us to get Hills Z/D dog food. It's not available everywhere. We have to try that for 2 months before we can do blood/allergy testing which can be more extensive and expensive.
Have anyone had this experience with their corgi? Milo only started this in the past 3 months since the weather has gotten cold. Any input appreciated!!

So sorry you are on the allergy treadmill. We have suffered many years and it does not seem to get any easier. Charlie's skin allergies are much more of problem for us in the warm months. He gets much better in cold weather. We take medicated baths and eat a grain-free diet. I like Davis melaleuca pet shampoo for bathing. It seems to soothe his skin even better than the prescription shampoo from my vet. I use Gold bond powder on hot spots and rashes. Some people use e-collars to keep their dogs from scatching obsessively but Charlie gets really weird and hides if he even thinks your going to get it out.
We have never been tested but I suspect certain types of tree and grass pollen are our main problems. Fleas can also cause alot of problems. The grain in the food causes Charlie to have diarrhea. We eat Natural Balance sweet potatoe and fish formula. I have never been a big fan of science diet. There is a lot of good information in past forums on food, just check them out. When he is really itchy he gets benadryl twice a day.
Dogs can get allergies to anything just like people, (dust, pollen, carpet, cleaning products, etc.) I recently saw a show on animal planet that featured a dog that was even allergic to her owners. So sad! I hope this little bit of info helps. Feel better Milo, Charlie sends sympathy scratches from Tn.

Our catahoula Ayla has suffered terribly with allergies. And Tank our cardi-x has had awful hot spots. We switched them to a more holistic diet and it has done wonders. They're eating Natural Balance Ultra-Premium. But there are grain-free diets out there that can usually help. Check out http://dogfoodanalysis.com for foods and their lists of ingredients. Tank was on IVD Duck/Potato for awhile and we just couldn't afford it...and we had to get it at the vet's office. Switching The Clan over to Natural Balance has been a great improvement. No butt itchies and hot spots on Tank and Ayla is looking much better. All the kids have evened out on weight and their coats look wonderful.

Have you had new carpeting, used new laundry soap, anything "new" in the last couple of months? Was your summer unusually different....a little wetter, and little drier? It could be just about anything.

Milo is now on Hill's Z/D. I know some dogs can be allergic to grains/wheat. But we're paying top money for this new dog food and it still has wheat/grain listed on the ingredients. So a grain-free diet is best?
We clean our hardwood floors the same as we did over a year and half ago. We just use lemon pine sol. I hope that doesn't bother him.
It pains me to see him itch/scratch/gnaw. Thank you for the suggestions. I just want to see if others out there ever gone through with the allergy testing.

My understanding is that if a dog has a food allergy (as opposed to environmental), most of the time their allergy is because of the grain in their diet. There are several foods out there. Most of them are a little pricey, but worth it if your dog is suffering from allergies. The added bonus is that these are usually very high quality foods and will be great for your dog's overall health. Some brands include Evo Innova, Orijen, and I think Blue Buffalo has one with only oatmeal. There are also people who swear by raw diets. The benefit of those is that you know exactly what your dog is eating, but the downside is the prep-work required. I hope you can figure it out.

My dog toby has horrible allergies! we have spent thousands of dollars at the vets... she has been sick since the day we bought her. I feel horrible for her we didn't know what she had,she would scrach then throw up the next day then her mouth would swell up 3 times the normal size. We never knew what was wrong.we went threw this for 6 months before they said get allergie tested. She is now on speciel food from the vets and we buy wet food from the vets for treats. I'm going to get her tested after the holidays i hear its about 400 dollars and they say she might have outdoor allergies too so if we can control her food allergies her outdoor allergies won't be so bad. I'm in the same boat! they have given her so many meds to help her and she stays sick for weeks it breaks my heart. She is doing great on the special food it has chicken and rice and pork fat? ( yuck) but she loves it! so keep me posted.

I realize this is an old thread but am going to revive it, as Tucker has really itchy armpits. I was going to use gold bond powder but afraid that if he likes his armpits afterwards, that cant be good for him. I guess I will have to use the comfy cone, hopefully he doesnt mind, but then what if he does, then what do I do?
He is on an allergy food already.
