Rescue Corgi can't sleep through the night?

Hi all!

I adopted (yesterday) a 6 year old corgi/shiba inu mix named Leo. It's been pretty awesome so far except that he doesn't get along with the cats at all despite what the shelter said (sigh), so we've been keeping him on a leash in the house and decided to kennel him at night.

We went to sleep last night around 9:30 (early for us, but he tuckered us out!) and took him out before going to bed. This morning, he woke us up making noise at 4:30 and I finally decided to take him outside because he wasn't quieting down. Sure enough, he went to the bathroom.

Do you think this will happen every night? I've heard that rescue dogs will often not sleep "through the night" at first, but he actually needed to go to the bathroom. I'm wondering if the shelter got started that early, or if his previous owners did?

What time does your corgi get up in the morning, and what time does he/she normally get to sleep? He did a little bit of whining, but I think having his kennel on my boyfriend's side of the bed (Leo's already taken to him) helped that a little.

Congrats on your new friend!! I have rescued several dogs and all of them seemed to take a day or two to adjust to the new surroundings and routine of potty time and feeding time. I think you will find in a day or two he will relax and get comfortable will his new routine and sleeping situation. Good luck

thank you very much! That makes sense. (: I didn't mind so much the 4:30 AM weirdly enough... just having that urgency of knowing I needed to get him outside got me up without the usual drowsiness. Which is good. thanks again (:

Be glad he asked to go out......cleaning up a cage can be WAY more trouble. He's a smart boy to give you a signal, it will really help you potty train him or refresh his training. Make sure you respond to his signals the first few weeks so he won't start a bad habit of potting in the crate, or the house.
