Hi guys,

I was wondering if anyone had a problem with their pup retaining a dissidious incisor. Murray's top right incisor is growing in and he has yet to lose that milk tooth. It's not even loose! When I got him neutered, the vet warned me to keep an eye on that tooth. Has anyone had to have their pup's baby teeth surgically removed? Any tips? When should I take him to the vet over this?

Thanks,

Jess

How old is he? I was going to say wait to have him neutered until you know his teeth aren't coming out so its just one procedure. My chihuahua did not lose her canines or her molars and we had to do a 2nd anesthetic procedure to remove them. And yes, I would remove them if they don't fall out on their own, he will have much worse dental disease growing up if those teeth are kept in. I would give him until he is at least maybe a year old to see what happens unless you are noticing a lot of plaque already forming in that area then I would have them removed sooner. Generally all of their adult teeth will be in by 8 months

When Jack was neutered at 6 months he still had several.  The vet said to keep an eye on them but that they almost always come out eventually, and they did.  Wish I could remember when they finally did fall out, but sorry to say I don't.

My miniature dachshund, adopted at 6 months, had all 4 extra canine teeth (puppy and permanent).  I waited until 9 months and had them removed.  Would have done it sooner if had she not needed the adjustment time.  You say the permanent tooth is just coming in, so it may still crowd out the puppy tooth.  Try giving a fresh beef knuckle bone (cut in half because, if uncut, the smooth surface will not work well for the purpose) to see if that will loosen the extra tooth naturally.
