Shedding
Buddy, my little Corgi that I rescued while on duty at my police department, has been seriously shedding since I brought him home. I brush him daily, but the shedding keeps up. My vet says he is in good health and his coat is shiny, so that isn't an issue. He gets quality food - Purina semimoist and Alpo canned. Maybe he is shedding because we are entering warm weather, but I'm not sure as Buddy is my first Corgi. None of our oyher three mutts shed nearly as much as Buddy. Can anyone give me some advice on this issue?

Hey Charlie, it is around that time of the year where the corgis blow their coat, use a regular wire brush to get the top coat off, then use the fulminator to get the bottom coat, make sure you read the instruction and use it correctly. you can put him on top of a table in your backyard and comb away.

Many thanks. I suspected that it was a natural response to the changing season, but wasn't sure. My Red Dobe and Black Lab mix hardly shed at all and my Blue Heeler only sheds a little. I bought a Furminator and use that after the wire brush and it seems to help, although there is fresh shedding every day. That said, it seems to be abating somewhat. I still cannot believe that some jerk dumped such a sweet little dog. Our town doesn't have format "animal control," so any strays get beought to the police department. We keep them 48 hours and if nobody asks, we take them to the county animal shelter. After 10 days or so, they euthanize them. The day after we got Buddy was cold and rainy. I was going to put a photo of him online to local animal lovers, but when I got to the PD he was wet and shivering, so the rest, as they say, is history. He is now a member of our "pack."

Such a sweet story, he's so lucky you were on duty! My guys shed all the time, but at least twice a year, you can pull it out of them in tufts -- and sadly, my two hit that point at different times! Bertie blew his winter coat last month, and now Ethel is doing it. We like to use the furminator in the backyard, and then we leave the fur for the birds to grab for nests. If we were more artistic, we'd use it to build some kind of giant Corgi topiary, as there sure is enough spare fur to do that!

Susan, Thsnks for the response. I'm still learning my way around Corgis in general and Buddy in particular. If they are all as sweet as he is, no wonder they are so popular. He's a great dog! I already bought a Furminator and had a wire brush for my others, so I'll be able to take better care of him!

Heavy shedding is also a corgi breed trait. Shippo sheds a LOT, but since I have to brush him daily to keep his coat from tangling, it cuts down on it by a lot.
Also, Purina and Alpo are not quality foods. Corn, high fructose corn syrup, wheat, soy, ethoxyquin, BHA and lots of salt are not quality ingredients. Alpo has also been involved in recalls in the past. I would check out The Dog Food Project as it is a very informative site about what's in your dog's food and how to identify better products. I hope it helps. It certainly helped me with my two.

how long have you had him? I mean tis the season to be shedding...and corgi's shed due to where they traditionally are from, have super thick fur coats to combat the cold temperatures and rain of the british isles.
Dogs with similar coats also do this "blowing" as it is called on an annual basis. Huskies, Chows, Shelties, etc. Your cattle dog would also go through a blowing too depending on it's coat type...mine does not as she has close cropped fur.

Hi Wendy,
I'm a reserve police officer and Buddy was briought in as a stray to my small police department on 16 May. I didn't know what breed he was, but fell in love with him from the first moment I saw him. We have three other dogs, a Red Doberman, an Australian Catle Dog (Blue Heeler) and a Black Lab/Blue tick hound mix. I have gotten a lot of support from other members and now know how to deal with his shedding. Buddy is a WONDERFUL little dog and a welcome member to our "pack."

Buddy will drop his undercoat possibly twice a year. A Furminator brush is great when he starts dropping his coat. Some people shave their Corgis in the warmer weather. Please, don't! Then you have to worry about sunburn and self-esteem issues! lol!

I'd never shave a dog unliess the vet recommended it. Their coat helps keep them cool in summer and warm in winter. I have a Furminator and have started brushing Buddy daily with wire brush followed by Furminator. He seems to enjoy it, as he comes trotting over when he sees the brush & Furminator!

We joke that we could knit a new corgi on a daily basis from the amount our three shed. I wondered about picking out the new carpet based on the color of their tufts to help hide what the vacuum misses. I didn't realize what blowing a coat meant. I just always told my neighbors that my dogs were molting :)
I've even gone so far as to bring in a mobile groomer who promised she was the best Furminator user around. After going over just two of ours she came out laughing and said this was the first breed that would find a way to shed even after you shaved it! Embrace the fuzz or you'll go mad.

It's funny, Sidney LOVES to be brushed too! I've never had a dog run TOWARDS me when he sees a brush before!
I second what Cheetah said about food. We've had a discussion a few months back about how nutrition might play a role in propensity to shed. Consider switching to a brand with no additives or fillers, like Blue Buffalo, Wellness (what Sidney has been on since puppyhood), Evo, Taste of the Wild, Solid Gold, etc
These products might seem to cost more, but you will feed a lot less because of the lack of fillers.
