As of yesterday, my 14-mo old corgi, Brian, started limping. I'd thought that he looked lame earlier that day, as he kept dropping his head when he walked, but I couldn't figure out for the life of me what leg he was favoring, and then he would walk fine later, so I chalked it up to my being paranoid. But then later that evening, Brian jumped off of my bed, and then he began obviously limping, favoring his right hind leg. He is continuing to favor his leg this evening (24hrs later), but is putting more weight on it than yesterday. I've checked his foot/leg for any signs of pain or problem, and haven't found anything. It doesn't seem to hurt him that much (at least he doesn't cry while walking or when i've probed his leg for injury), other than his favoring of it.

Being terrified that this was more than a sprain, I went and did some research, and found out about panosteitis, which is sounding likely, since he's still pretty young. Also, I recently switched to Wellness Core formula (from Wellness Super Mix), which is significantly higher in protein content (which I read can be a contributing factor). Has anyone had similar problems switching to a higher protein diet, resulting in panosteitis?

Anyhow, I was wondering what other people might think and what the best way to deal with this sort of problem would be. Brian's due for his yearly check-up in about 2 wks, and i'm really hoping that I can hold off bringing him to the vet until then!

I would keep him confined for a couple days. No jumping, no running, only light walking. I would keep him crated if you don't already while you work or are away to prevent another sprain. If the limping continues after a couple/few days of rest... I would take him in. It probably wouldn't hurt to wait to take him in... unless there is a significant change in pain or limping after the bedrest. I hope this helps.
yes, thanks. he's currently under "crate/pen arrest", and i've been trying best i can to limit his activity (although it's pretty difficult!). Hopefully, it will go away in a couple of days...
