For several years now, I have been wanting a Pembroke Welsh Corgi. I'm planning on moving to a different location soon, though I'm still going to be living within Louisiana. Every place I've been looking at, especially lately, I'm trying to find either an apartment or home for rent that would be a nice place for both my cat and a possible Corgi.

Though I'm unable to buy or adopt one at this very moment, I've been attempting to look around to see if there are any in the area. So far, I haven't had any luck. I'm wondering at this point what would be the best option since Corgis are most certainly not a common breed in Louisiana it seems. The most promising breeder I found is located in eastern Florida and I admittedly have a very poor sense of direction, so I wouldn't trust myself with driving that distance without possibly ending up at the Canadian border or something....

John is right about the exercise. Corgi's are just like the energizer bunny.........they keep on going.  They not only like activities but they need them.  If they don't get long walks, chasing balls (in our case crows and squirels also) games of fetch and other physical and mental activities they aren't as happy.  Corgi's and boredom don't go well together.

I'll second everything John said; I'll also suggest that you make yourself known to a number of breeders in your region (not just your state).  We were able to get Titus because we were a) vetted by a breeder in Wisconsin who, though she didn't have any dogs available, believed we were serious and knowledgeable about the breed and told us she'd keep us in mind for the future; and b) we weren't dead set on a puppy.  The breeder with whom we spoke eventually put us in touch with one of her friends, also a breeder, who was looking to re-home Titus, who was one and a half.  She drove him across three states to get him to us.

This is a sort of long-winded way of saying that you shouldn't be too deterred by distance, though it's certainly more convenient if you can work with someone close by.  Also, even though puppies are awesome, don't rule out adult dogs.  It was nice not to have to crate or house train Titus--he came equipped with that knowledge.

Lots and lots of research, something to keep in mind is that though yes the general personality is well, just that. Each dog will vary on the personality.

The known health problems though are well just that, they are genetic, not promised or guaranteed by any means but something to keep in mind when doing your research.

But you're in the right place for a wealth of information here, I've never been on a form where the members are so knowledgeable and willing to help before like this place.

Anyways, ask around...feel free and enjoy your stay. Please let us know which breed of dog you do choose and also upload a few pictures...:)
