So Franklin is going to be 3 on Saturday and in all those years he has NEVER ONCE gone potty without me telling him to. This has sort of been an ongoing issue for me since that means I can't really EVER leave him alone for long periods of time because he won't take himself outside, but will instead hold it all day. Does anybody know if there is a way to teach a dog to go outside and potty on their own? He will pee and poop on command but only on walks will he go without me telling him to. I have a dog door and Franklin has 24/7 access to my patio which has a special little potty area for him. He will use it when I send him outside to go potty, but will never take himself out on his own. I have tested this before and we have gone up to 10 hours without him going outside to potty, then when I do take him outside he pees forever and seems SOOOOOO relieved. The fact that he won't take himself out has led me to have to come home on my school breaks to let him out, or when I am working 10-12 hour days I have to hire somebody to take him for a potty walk. This is just silly to me since he has unrestricted access to the outside and full run of the house! Any suggestions on how to get him to go out by himself? I have accidentally over potty trained my dog!!

not to be silly but do you have an answering machine ? maybe you can call until it comes on so he can hear it and tell him Franklin gooooooo potty !!! lol ?? I dont know that was my only thought

lol I have actually thought about that! I set up a Skype for when I had Truck so I could yell at him when he was barking and being obnoxious lol,  maybe that would work!

At my bosses' house I trained the dogs to answer to the intercom system.  I'd hit "all page" and say "Maggie, Mochi - come to the garage, Dan (the dog walker) is here!" and they would both come running from wherever they were.

Definitely worth a shot trying the answering machine suggestion, or even a pre-recorded message on a computer that turns on at a certain time....maybe with a webcam, so you can see if it works?  Or you can practice with a recording while you're there until he starts getting it.....

I think the answering machine idea is BRILLIANT!!

Does he go outside just to go out? My dogs believe outside is part of their territory and have to patrol it periodically whether they need to go potty or not. What if you put enticing toys, chews, treats outside and encouraged him to go out without you? Have you ever locked him out on the patio? If he couldn't come in the house would he go? (in nice weather, of course.) A lot off dogs, even corgi sized are kept outside all the time. It wouldn't hurt him to be out during a nice day if your patio is safe and secure.

he does go outside just to sniff around and if its sunny to lay in the sun, but he doesn't go out often. More when we are at my parent's house with a big yard and squirrels to chase :-) I used to put toys and treats out on the patio for him to find and that is how I got him to go out at all. Maybe I will start that again. The thought of locking him outside makes me sad, lol. I don't think I could do that even though some of my neighbors lock their dogs out when they are gone. He is a bit spoiled in that regard!

I like the answering machine idea.  When my husband worked out of town last year he would call and leave messages for Baron to listen to.  Baron is also over potty trained.  He has his special area and goes on command only which does come in handy when it is 10 degrees outside.
