2 corgi + $100 vacuum... LOL!!!!  Good luck with that one!  We tried keeping our cheap-o vacuum after we got Frosty, but it just wasn't working.  We ended up getting the mid-range Dyson from Target when it went on sale one year for around $400-$500.  I would recommend trying to find something with a canister because you are going to need to dump a LOT and bagged vacuum could get really expensive.  Good luck!!

http://www.amazon.com/Eureka-3276AVZ-Whirlwind-Bagless-Upright/dp/B... That's $102, and it got some good reviews on various websites (more bad than good on Amazon though).. May wanna look around more, but it's in your price range :P

We got a Hoover WInd Tunnel.   It was about $135 on sale in a department store.

I have said it before and I'll say it again:  before making a major purchase, check out Consumer Reports Buying Guide.  That's what we did.  This particular model (not all Hoovers, just THIS one) scored about 1 point lower (out of 100 points) than the Dyson, and I believe better on pet hair,  and is $300 cheaper.

We've had it about 2 or 3 years now.  The filters can be washed and don't need replacing.  It has a dust cup, not a bag.  It never loses suction (no clogs).  Retractable cord, the tools are pretty good, it's good on bare floors and carpet.

It's very similar to this one:

Like I said, experts and Consumer Reports say it's about as good as a Dyson, we've had great luck with it (Two Corgis and a cat) and it's much, much cheaper.

Ours is actually this one without the big headlight:

Amazon has it for $151.

We also have the Wind Tunnel.  It sucks up dog hair wonderfully.  We had ours 2 years before the belt broke (replacing them is cheap and easy), so I'd say it's durable.

I may get a Shop-Vac at Ace for $50.  6gal 3hp.  About 2' high.  Noisy.  It's a guy thing.

Might prove inconvenient for towing around the house by the hose.  I won't have to deal with stairs much.  Not particularly compact for storage.

No bag.  What I do is take it outdoors, empty it into a plastic bag, then take it way out in the back yard, remove  the  accordion-pleated filter and blow it clean with the nozzle (you don't need the filter in the cannister when it's blowing).

Wear a dust mask when you do this, and make sure nobody is downwind of you.  Dust is dangerous.  Do NOT breathe it.

Noise is dangerous too.  ALWAYS wear good ear protection when you vacuum.  Hearing loss is difficult to appreciate when you're young and stupid.  It's much more tangible when you're old and stupid.

I have the big 4.5hp shop-vac for the basement.  It really sucks.

Best of all, the parts are plastic, tooth-proof yet tooth-friendly.  And if the corgi ever gets loose, all you have to do is turn on the shop-vac, and the dog will come running home to kill it.  It worked for me once.

I though noise was one of the complaints about the Dyson.  I always wear ear protection with a vacuum or a table saw,

I picked up a refurbished Dyson for $199 at the Dollar Store.  It's fantastic--very quiet, picks up tons of hair, and is easy to empty the canister.

Thanks to a cat....I had to rip up all my carpet.  I never bothered replacing it yet,  so I just sweep it up, and I have a little canister vac that is about 15 years old that does the trick!

That's what I did, but I got many nonskid throw-rugs for takeoff and landing zones.  The dogs take flying leaps off furniture, and I fear they'll slip on the smooth floor and tear a CCL or something.  Smooth floors aren't so dog-friendly; dogs prefer the stinky horrible carpet.

I did see where Shark got good marks.

We got rid of the carpet, and have a laminate floor with a few area rugs.  Just run the Swifer around to pick up the dog hair every so often, and then the Molly Maids handle the vacuuming.  :)
