Just wondering how much should I walk my 4 month old pembroke corgi pup.  He has so much energy lately that I really wanted to start training him on loose leash walking on top of playing in the yard/house.

Problem is I've heard that walking a pup while his bones and joins are developing can be bad for him later in life.  I read a few books and articles/forums online and they all say the general rule is 5mins times how old he is should be the appropriate amount of walking time daily.  A few others tell me not to walk the pup at all till he's at least 8-12 months old.  : \ so confusing!

So far I've taken him out on 10 min walks twice a day and sometimes I  add and extra quick 5 min walk if we don't have time to play with him during the day.  For the last few seconds of the walk I usually sprint :P with him across 2 houses before i take a last quick turn in the yard and get ready for some free play.

Any suggestions ?

It's recommended to keep their walks to around a mile until they're at least a year old no avoid to much stress on their bones/joints, but not walking them at all is just silly. I think you would both be insane by the time he was a year old lol. I think I did 20-30 minute leisurely walks with both my guys at that age, gradually working up the time and speed as they got older.

Hi Shrn & Fits,

It is the walking down / jumping down motion that clash with the bones / joints development. You CAN walk him and take him to places, gradually build up your stamina, remember you need to lead and walk him, not the other way round, Corgis are herding dogs, they are driven by sights and sound, they need physical and mental stimulation daily, walk him 45-60 mins on leash in your neighbourhood daily, rain or shine. Backyard / dog park free roam doesn't count.

what is the best kind of mental stimulation? I try to play with my puppy and have her explore the house, etc, and i try to teach her tricks. But when I read "always provide mental stimulation," I'm never sure what is meant :T
