Hi,
my 11 week old Cardigan Welsh seems to be changing colors.
His red patches above his eyes are starting to travel up to his ears.
I was worried that he wasn't going to get a blaze, but at this point, it looks like he'll have a black one. Will these color changes be complete once he gets his adult coat? He already has some of it on his back, and it's soft and glossy and black.

His feet have fawn "booties" with white parts- is this normal? I always thought white "booties" was the norm for corgies..
We adopted him from a woman who bought him from a breeder. If I could get in contact with the breeder I would!

Thanks,
Libby

Hi!

Can you post more pictures of him? I can tell you more if I can see him without his sweater on :).

He doesn't look like a Cardi to me at first glance; he looks like a Pem with very little white. And no, he won't get any more white than he has now. There are some (a few) Cardis with almost no white, but it's uncommon. We usually like a lot of white on a dog, much more than the Pem people like.

Cardigans do sometimes come in his coloring, but most black Cardigans are marked like Dobermans, with the tan or brindle points confined to sharper areas. And his head doesn't look very Cardigan-ish. That's why I think he's a Pem with a tail, or maybe a Pem-Cardi cross. If he is, his red will continue to spread and will eventually take over most of his head; it will creep up his legs and belly too.

If you're absolutely sure he's a Cardi, I can help you find his breeder; there would only be a few babies born with that little white and I am sure someone would recognize him.

We figured he was a Pembroke, he acts exactly like one. But, we came to the conclusion that he was a Cardigan because he has a looooooong tail. The woman we got him from didn't specify, she couldn't take care of him because he was a "last minute gift", but she was positive he was bought from a breeder.

I have been desperately trying to figure out what kind of corgi he is! He acts EXACTLY like my friend's Pem, yappy, loves to run, so much enthusiasm and energy and stubborn as a mule! I don't think he is mixed with any other breed of dog, he does look like a corgi to me, I'm just not sure which.

Also, his muzzle has been getting a lot less black, and his feet are getting whiter. His head is also turning into a red hue, and the white on his chest is slowly creeping up more. And his head has gotten so much more red.

Here are a few pictures! The first one is when we first got him at 8 wks.
The rest are recent pictures (11 wks)- you can see just how red his head is getting.

And his eyes aren't blue, they're brown- it's just the flash.

He is as cute as a bug - and yes, a Pem. Just one who got to keep his tail. Usually the breeder docks them when they're a couple of days old. If you thought they were born without tails, you're definitely not alone, but actually it's pretty uncommon for them to be born with a natural bob; the overwhelming majority are docked.

I am glad he fell into your hands! He'll probably end up as what is called a red-headed tri - http://www.lakeshorecorgi.com/public_education/colors/rhtdog.htm. Pembrokes tend to become much more shaded as they grow - they develop what the Shiba Inu people call urajiro, or light underside. So his chest will look whiter and whiter but it's not actually his spot expanding; it's that he's becoming lighter tan there.

Cardigans do not have much urajiro; they tend to stay more solid-colored, though in a tri or red their heads will get a little lighter/redder as they grow up and the darker puppy coat clears. Clue, the merle bitch in my avatar picture, has bigger, redder cheeks than she did as a tiny baby, but otherwise she looks about the same. My current babies, who are about four months old now, have slightly brighter brindle on their cheeks and eyebrows but it hasn't come creeping up their legs or onto their bellies the way it would in a Pem.
Thank you so much! I'm glad to finally have an answer. :)

I am excited to see what color he will be when he has matured.
By the way, Clue is beautiful! :)
