Lol! Those independent treat-minded thinkers! The target is always a double edged sword for me. Baxter has gotten to know that it means treats and if he sees it at the end of a contact, he will go around the contact to get to it. Tricky little guys!

 

I'm glad your homework has been paying off, Jenny! When I taught Baxter 6 he would only do 6 out of the 12 in class. Training outside of class is so important! Keep up the good work!

 

I just posted a blog entry about our most recent AKC trial including pictures and videos of the runs. It was a lot of fun, but some very long, almost 12 hour days.

Funny agility story:  Jack went back to class tonight after an extended winter break.  He was meant to go jump-tire-tunnel-Aframe, in a loop.   So when he came off Jump 1, the downside of the A-frame was in front of him.  He was meant to angle off to the right towards the tire.

Having been away and not been on any contact obstacles in awhile, he came barreling down the A-frame without pausing, so the trainer set up a target plate.

So Jack goes over his jump and runs right to the target plate.  When that failed to get the anticipated reward, he ran a third of the way up the A-frame (on the down side), turned around, came back down, did a perfect 2on/2off (which of course he NEVER does when I ask him to) and stayed there FOREVER bobbing his nose at the target plate.   

Such fun to do agility with "independent thinkers."  :-)

We've been practicing a couple times a day on our poles for about a week now. We had our first class last night since practicing at home. I was worried that our work at home wouldn't translate to class since she has sets of 12 poles and I have 6. However, he ROCKED those weave poles like he never has. Previously, he would just run by them in class or weave a few poles and then pop out. Last night, he missed one entry (my fault) but started weaving after the second pole. Everyone in class was complimenting me on how well he was doing. The practice is really paying off!

My suggestion is to make a teeter. Usually the A-frame and dog walk are too big and difficult to build yet easier to train. The teeter is harder to train so it's beneficial to have one at home. I am a firm believer in purchasing weave poles. Usually the home made ones have a PVC base which the dogs have to learn to step over. Since dogs don't generalize, when presented with competition weave poles, they think of them as a new obstacle because they're not exactly like the PVC based weave poles. The training doesn't usually cross over well. However there are exceptions.

Ordered adjustable weave poles and an 18' tunnel to add to my two DIY jumps. Probably could have made the weaves but who knows when that would get done and Tucker is falling behind in class on weave skills. Now I just need to make a contact obstacle and I'll have a pretty good little practice course in my backyard!

Great picture!!! Agility is the best isn't it? I have another AKC trial this weekend. Actually I have agility trials for the next 5 straight weekends. But I'm not an addict. No. Not me. :D

We brought home Daisy's baby brother (8 weeks) Sat. night and she was too pooped from agility to care much. She sacked out and we woke up early to leave the house Sunday without her paying much attention to the pup. She did great on Sunday too and Q'd in all 5 runs again. I am so proud of her! I was happy we got both Snookers but the last one was pure luck. It was the last run of the weekend and I really don't know how we did it because I am a crummy Snooker handler too! One time I ran Snooker I was actually calling the numbers and colors of the obstacles instead of telling Daisy jump, tunnel, etc.! She is such a forgiving dog and did each one I called out. The judge was impressed that she knew her numbers so well. ;) We have only participated in CPE trials but hope to do an AKC event in March. I do not know much about the AKC events so will be reading up on it. I am glad you had a good weekend too Cheri. Thanks for the luck from Baxter and Zigs too. I think it helped! Anyway we had a blast!! I just love agility!!

Very fabulous! I really love CPE, except for Snooker and that's only because I'm a crummy Snooker handler. :) We competed in AKC this weekend and did pretty well. We qualified in a difficult FAST on Saturday (only a hand full of dogs over all qualified) and in JWW. We didn't qualify in STD because Mom's brain didn't start at the same time the run did. The brain had a late start, about obstacle #5. Obstacles 5-20 were beautiful because the brain was with us during that part of the run. :) On Sunday we QQ'd (yippee) and the JWW Q earned us our MXJ. We could have q'd in FAST if I'd stuck to my plan but I thought about how good Dudley had been all weekend and the long drive home....so after the send we did the A-frame and then a big WAHOO! around the outside of the course! We didn't get enough points but we didn't care! It was fun!

That is so awesome! Congrats!! She is going to be even more pooped with a playmate around. Is her brother younger or older than she is? Can't wait for pictures! Good luck tomorrow!
