West LA Corgi Crew & Meetup

A group for Corgis and their people from all around the LA area... and who would like to meetup on the westside!

Location: Los Angeles
Members: 59
Latest Activity: Sep 29, 2014

Let's get the LA corgis together on the westside!

*every Saturday & Sunday regular meetups 8am-9am @ Redondo Beach Dog Park

(usually very well attended, every weekend even with rain and on holidays)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Notes:

1. Please freely set up your own meetup times! Common meetup locations include (all on the small dog side); Playa Vista's Obbereider Dog Park, Barrington Dogpark in Brentwood, Redondo Beach Dogpark.

2. Urge you all to join in with the current weekly meet up at the Redondo Beach Dog Park on Saturday & Sunday mornings from 8am-9am every week. It's on the small dog side but a large, grassy area. Ollie and I go every weekend and there's a great group of about 10-15 corgis (one day we hit 30+) and their people who consistently attend. A big plus is that everyone there is super friendly and helpful, and because it is early it is nice and cool for our furcoated-friends and leaves your day open for human playtime!

3. We will not be organizing meetups in Santa Monica as anyone who does not live in Santa Monica would be unable to meet there; you must be licensed in SM in addition to LA County in order to use the SM facilities, and this limits the corgis & people who could attend. Not worth risking it as it's a several hundred dollar fine and they actually have people at the park checking regularly.

4. This is a new group so please join and invite others! :)

I love what a caring mother you are Ollies mama! Makes me feel better that I am not the only one hehe. My fiance thinks im a nut sometimes because I spoil and worry about quixote so much. Thanks for the advice on the beach, cant wait to take her there and to try your tips.

Renee & Lacey, you should post that invite on the SoCal corgi group too in case there are more takers! :)

All you herding corgis out there. Let's play soccer at the Barrington Dog Park on Sunday, Jan. 30th from 1-2:30. I'll bring the ball.

The Coronado beach is my personal favorite b/c it's the largest off leash dog beach in southern CA and very clean. There are always a lot of dogs there (all breeds, shapes, and sizes) and we've met some nice people and dogs there. It's a really enjoyable area to picnic or stop by a cafe for humans, and there is a lot of free parking. The big thing for me there is that I've never seen an aggressive dog there and when Ollie was initially afraid of the water, he had so many buddies to play with that after about 15 mins he just jumped in the water right after them. I also love seeing the dogs on boogie boards and surf boards out there :)

Word to the wise though; unless you are 100000% confident in your dog's swimming abilities, our short legged pups should be in a life jacket. The ocean current may not feel like anything to us but I'd rather be safe than sorry! We've never had a problem and Ollie doesn't mind the life jacket at all.

I also (being the paranoid mommy I am) put children's water proof sunscreen on his nose/snout and insides of his ears and afterwards, I rinse him off, use an old tooth bruch to get any sand between his toes/pads of his feet out while rinsing, and put some saline eye drops in his eyes to prevent any sand irritation. Then I put a couple of drops of mineral oil (with a cotton swab) by his eye lids, nose, insides of ears, and paws. I learned that from my godmother who's bred & showed dogs for nearly 40 years and it generally takes me about 5 mins to do it all. The other benefit is that my car is nearly sand free and he's pretty clean when we get home :)

quixote hasnt been to a dog beach before but i cant wait to take her! She just got spayed this morning, poor baby... so right when she gets better ill treat her with the dog park. Just wondering why do you like the coronado dog beach the most? I havent been there before.

Ollie & I are not sure if we can make it to the meetup as we're pretty busy that weekend.. but we will try!

Redondo is also our favorite b/c we have so many corgi friends there and b/c it's maintained by super cute lil cub scouts, but we also very much enjoy the Runyon Canyon dog hike area, the Long Beach & Huntington Dog beaches (though the Coronado Dog Beach is the most fun when we get down there), and the Sepulveda Basin park as well :)

Also, you register your pet either by mailing in a downloadable form & mailing it in with a $15 check and copies of your doggie's current shots/neuter or spay, or by going in to any humane society office and showing them these items/paying the $15. I prefer to go in and do it b/c then I get my tag right away, they will set up a reminder postcard for when it's due the next year, and you don't have to have the dog with you, just the paperwork!

Hey guys. The barrington dog park is the regular dog park that quixote and I go to since it is closest to our house. I rate it a ... SO SO... The small dog park is real small, so I usually take her to the big dog side, where other corgis usually go as well. It is a little smelly though hehe, not the best matinenced park i suppose. However it is a big area for the dogs to play in, on the big dog side of the park. I think the only reason I rate it a soso is because I had been spoiled with what i think is the best dog park, Redondo Beach Dog park. For many years. It is located in the southbay in Redondo beach over by where I use to live. We still visit there time to time. It is very well matinenced meaning clean, with both bark and grass on the ground. It is huge, both the little dog area and large dog area. Extremely friendly people and dogs are always there. Just a great crowd of people and we hardly everrr see any aggressive dogs, or dog fights. I may have seen one in the past 10 years but thats it. At the barrington dog park, there is a mix of really great dogs and owners, and sometimes a rough crowd of more aggressive dogs that "regularly attend". That part makes me a little uncomfortable, but if i see the dogs with aggressive tendencies we venture off to the other side with more friendly dogs.
Hope this review helps!
