Long Beach, NY, but have lived in CA since college.
About Me:
Married with children...all 3 grown and flown the nest.
Welsh Corgi Breeder?
No
About My Corgi(s):
Have had R & W Pembrokes my whole life, usually in pairs. Lucy, our now 5-yr old charmer, is a delight and keeps us laughing. We purposely picked a petite girl so that we could fly with her in the passenger cabin. We had our maiden voyage CA to NY (w. Lucy in the largest sized airline approved sherpa) and we all survived––esp. me, with the help of a bloody mary!
Fast forward a year and we re-homed a tri-male puppy who would have been in the pound if we didn't intervene. He had been left alone basically 24/7 in a backyard, and was all ribs and ears. He was a handful and the most difficult corgi I had ever owned. I don't know who was more upset by the decision to keep him, Jack, my husband, or Lucy. But all things happen for a reason. He's a wonderful, gentle and loyal corgi and we're all in love with him, including Lucy, (most of the time!), haha. RR turned 1 yo this month & surprised us all by becoming quite the looker. Lucy is 5. RR is twice her size, Everyone thinks that she's the puppy. Ya gotta love happy endings!!!
Yes. My response was to a funny photo of a corgi with a grape. At the time I was unaware that they are toxic. Lucy has on occasion eaten a grape, as she tends to eat anything that touches the floor, luckily will no ill effects. Dittto with a small slice of onion. We do try to be careful with anything on that toxic list, and with any people food in general.
Thanks, my Buffy had multiple problems with her back, knees, and liver. It was actually the liver problems that took her at only 6 years. We got Izzy shortly after and have recovered well with the help of the most loving little corgi possible. Tucker was a beautiful guy and lucy is a real cutie!
Oh I know it. He was my boy through and through. My mom says we were made for each other. Copper (my corgi now) is a mama's boy too. He loves my boyfriend but I'm definitely the favorite. We swear he knows what we are saying. The one day I was sitting on the bed and my boyfriend was standing at the end of the bed scratching Cop. My bf said "Who's your favorite person bud?" Copper whipped right around and came and cuddled up next to me and gave my bf a look like DUH! lol They are definitely something else.
I think it is a good idea. people make scrap books and videos to keep memories alive. Pets can be part of the family and give us a lot of laughs and joy. so if you can remember that its a good thing.
Lucy's a mama's girl, especially in new situations. But she's a daddy's girl because he's the one that does most of the long walks with her and she loves following him around on his chores. Of course she knows his outdoor chores so well that she loves to anticipate what he's going to do next and be one step ahead. Typical corgi!
Tag was two when we got another Corgi. We brought Razz in as a puppy (4 Weeks, long story). Tag and Razz are full sisters, just from different litters. Two years later we got Charmin who was around 10 weeks old. We brought in Lucky, who is Charm's full brother, a year after that when he was 3 months old. Just recently we adopted Ren, whom we believe was about 8 months at the time. As my wife is firmly in the lead of our pack, we haven't had any issues with integrating new corgi's into our pack. Also, foster dogs have come and gone, with few issues. There have been some issues with some Corgis being more playful or liking different games than others, but, overall, it's been fairly smooth. We found Linny at one point and he slowly worked his way into the pack as well. He now runs and plays with the Corgis and even plays tug of war.
Well, that's a pretty long comment, but, you did want to know about how we built our pack.
Thank you for your kind words Jack & Wendy, I'm just a regular guy, we have a good team here to keep things rolling. Our friendly members is what makes the site different :)
awww thanks for your nice comment about Phinny. I wish I would've seen Kirstie Alley with her Corgis. Did you get to see it??? I love your pictures by the way.
I have ideas, but I know it will come to me when I see him! They are four weeks now, litter of 6 boys!!! I get to drive over to see them in a week!!! I am thinking of Scout, Max, Jerry, Devin, just don't know! Do you have some ideas for me??????
Funny the names you listed! Riley was actually Jacob Riley, but my ex husband didn't want a dog named Jake, so we called him Riley. I had Samantha Mae, Winston James, Cody Ryan, Fritz Malloy, Charlie Cooper. I love Sam, but feel weird to call the new pup since I had Samantha. I was going to name my daughter Bailey, wanted to name her Samantha, but had the dog, so couldn't do that! LOL I am sure when I see him it will be right there for me! I can't wait!
Thank you for all the help on the names! Fred was actually the name of my dog growing up, LOL! I also chose Winston for the cat, because he was grey, reminded me of a smokey color, my Father had just passed, and he loved to smoke Winstons! How weird! I thought of another name, Rascal?? I keep telling myself to stop until I see the pup, but it's fun to run through them. What do you think of Ben or Teagan??? I am so excited and nervous at the same time!
Sorry, no pics of Sirius -- that was all film photography back then. She was small, 20 lb.s max. Light-colored red, not as much white as Lucy, very smart.
Jack and Wendy: You have wonderful photographs and Lucy has grown into a lovely girl! The puppy pictures are very special....All the best from Williamsburg, VA: Nancy, Bear, Tasha and Linus
Thank-you for your kind comments...Sam, Merry and I are off for a visit to Starbucks and the park before the storm hits today. They are saying we may have hail....Heaven Forbid. I try to get to the park 3 or 4 times a week, so that Merry and Sammy can have some play time other than their back yard. We have so much sand on the street from the winter weather that I don't want them walking in that. I think the sand on the pavement is very abrasive. Hope you have a wonderful day...Sorry to hear that your husband has not been well.
I have a tri-color named Lucy, too! Her registered name is Lucille MacGillicuddy. (BOY! Did she live up to her namesake!) She turns 2 on 4/10 . . . tennis balls for all her buddies!
She & my Ruby switch playing good dog, bad dog. Kind of like a good cop, bad cop thing.I swear I can almost see the devil horns or angel wings. And the look on their faces "What? Who ME?" is so funny when they know I know what they are trying to pull. Of course, it being so funny, I can't help laughing, so it probably reinforces it! Corgis have so much personality!
haha, maybe we will get more people to join the OC group...
About the herding. There are several places. None really all that close to Fullerton though. We go to a place in Long Beach. The closest for us. Since the other places I know of are in Malibu, Riverside and LakeView Terrace. Oh, I just realized that our trainer is also in Anaheim. The class in Long Beach starts at 11am on Thursdays (ever Thursday, no matter if rain or shine, and even on holidays). The Anaheim class in on Wednesdays (not sure about the time), but here is the website of our trainer that might help with further questions, such as location and so on :-) http://home1.gte.net/jerstew/table_of_contents.htm
In LB, the class is basically all day. You drop in whenever you can...we usually go right around noon. The hubby and I are both on a long lunch break at that time. We usually stay till around 2 sometimes 3pm.
The first couple of times, a trainer will take you and Lucy out. You get to see how Lucy responds to the sheep. We took Bailey when she was only 5 months old, and she caught on super quickly. She has a really big herding instinct. Lately, there have been other corgis to our class, but they only came ones. The corgis could have cared less about the sheep...I don''t really know what determines if one corgi goes for the sheep and the other doesn't. You just got to get out there and see.
Bailey is friendly with everyone usually. She is really good about meeting dogs, but once she gets too comfortable, she turns into a little bully, and she can't handle when other dogs bully her back. She is also quite obsessive about her toys (mainly her ball or frisbee whatever she is chasing) She does not like when other dogs come even near her. She does not want to play with them. she is in her own little ball/frisbee world. Nothing else exists. However, when we remove all these stimuli she is really good with everyone :-)
We should definitely see if we can arrange a playdate one of these dates.
That would be great to meet up at herding :-) Bails is a little intense at herding though...all she sees is sheep :-)
And no, it is not going to matter how old Lucy is and neither is her experience. They will work with you. If the dog has the instinct then you won't have to worry too much about them. We always tease my husband saying that Bailey is doing a great job...too bad, that he as the handler has absolutely no clue what he is doing :-)
I go to Chapman in Orange. I worked one semester at North Court in Fullerton, and I will be working there again this summer. It is my favorite court. It is small and everyone knows each other :-)
Jack & Wendy, W&T's remembrance link is on the left side of my MyCorgi page about half way down.
As for the doggies sleeping on the bed, ours are welcome but most of the year here in Arizona it's too warm so they prefer to sleep on the floor where it's a bit cooler. Gromit even prefers the hard floor to the carpet. I think his first Arizona summer is going to be a difficult one for him with his extra thick coat.
Jack & Wendy, the tri-corgi playing with Gromit is his brother "Night." He's fine and handsome fellow. He and Gromit talk on the phone now and again about the good old days when they were puppies at the kennel. Night says he may have a show career ahead of him now.
Sorry for the confusion. Night still lives at Coalbyn Kennel in California with his breeder, Jean York. And we do allow the dogs in the bedroom and on the bed. The wiener dog would freeze to death in the winter otherwise and as for Gromit, he's just spoiled so he gets up on the bed which is right behind my computer chair. Very convenient for scratching and tummy rubs. Yes, the Corgi fur gets everywhere but it seems to anyway and the fun of taking a nap with a Corgi buddy snoring next to you is worth it. :-) The funny thing is, after we lost W&T last year the Corgi fur was gone from the house after a bit and we found we missed it. No Corgi fur meant no Corgi and that was very sad. A few weeks ago Debbie walked up to me and pointed to her shirt with a big smile and said "I have Corgi fur on me!" We do clean up for company and going out in public though.
Thank you for the comments! and joining the group! :)
Walker and Willow are great!, even though Walker is a year old now, I forgot what having a puppy around feels like!! The picture I think you were referring to (of two corgis in a car) Is actually Willow laying next to a mirror up on my sisters headboard!! She took it while she was pup sitting lil Willow! and I think its one of my favs!
any how, take care :)
No problem with the gabbiness. I'm a habitual writer of things on the 'net.
Sadly, Gromit and Night are the only members of their litter to survive. Something went wrong and the other pups, how many I don't know, didn't survive the C-section at the vet's office. As far as I know Jean has not shown Night yet, she was just thinking about it back at the first of March. I don't know how old dogs have to be for their first showing.
Anyway, Gromit and Lucy could be siblings or at least related. Gromit's sire was Ch Twinan Another Chance for Solvenik and his dam was Coalbyn's Patriot's Dream. I have Gromit's pedigree so if you can send me Lucy's (or I'll send you Gromit's) we can see if they match up somewhere. It's kind of fun to see who's related to who although the dogs never seem that impressed that "Dad" was a champion.
As much as I'd love to have Night, and believe me I was tempted against all common $ense to take both pups, I won't let myself have two dogs of the same age again. My previous two Corgis, W&T, were brother and sister and my worst nightmare was that I might lose them close together, which I did. Losing them both within nine months cast a pall over the whole year, and frankly, I still choke up if I think on it too much. So, we'll be looking for a second Corgi but probably not for a couple of years yet. I will try to keep track of Night though so he and Gromit can keep up on each other's adventures.
And you guessed right, the graph paper background is from the MyCorgi page choices. Appeals to my geek engineer side. LOL. I played around a little with my photo editor and added Gromit to the header although the graph lines don't really match.
