Welcome Donna,  Eli is sure a pretty, happy looking fellow.  I sent you good thoughts for your early riser with the barking problems.  When you adopt an adult, it is just take it as it comes and try to be understanding until you can come up with a solution.  I do one thing to try to get my bossy female to leave me alone for a little bit in the morning.  I buy Wholesome Hide Double twist rawhide sticks.  Wholesome hide uses thicker rawhide than most companies and the double twist sticks last long enough for me to get my coffee before serving up their breakfast.  The rescue that I adopted about 2 years ago is very demanding about her food and it took quite a while to convince her that she couldn't just start barking any time she wanted for food.  You never know what baggage the older ones carry.  good luck.
