so the cold weather has hit and this is the first winter for me with my dog, the past 2 mornings have had to carry him home from our walk, he starts limping from the cold. Our early morning walk is about a half hour, was surprised that he became so uncomfortable in this amount of time....any suggestions on what to do? should I get boots for him or will he adjust? it is only -6 today and it get alot colder than this through out the winter, we live in Ontario, Canada....

I have been having the same problem with my 4 month old corgi but it only is 45 F at coldest and by that I mean it finally hit 45 last night.

Kristen, It's only -15 this AM and all mine were sitting with paws up in under 5 minutes today...guess they're only going out to do what they need to:( I think they're saying a few more days of this.

Someone just told me that the cement is as cold as the temp outside and that the snow is actually warmer...don't know but it might help???? If that's true!

@Jane, Brrrrr....only zero here this morning, cold enough for me, I'm not trading with you!

Anna, many times we are colder here than north eastern MN...don't know why. Then the winds are horrible. We have so many cold temp warnings here right now and its not going to get much better for several days.

How old is your poochie? I started my 9-year old on a joint medication--it's chewable and there are many in the pet stores.  One a day seems to keep her compfy.

Sophie seems to prefer walking on the grass (or snow if there is any) between the sidewalk and the street when it gets below 5F or so. I guess it's the opposite of really hot weather - you can walk on grass barefoot better than on pavement.

We've had cold, snowy weather, the high 2F. last 3 days.  I have not found Mowgli to have a problem with his feet, but it does seem to affect his lungs and, if I leave him out more than 5 or 10 minutes he gets a hoarse cough.  He had real bad kennel cough and also heartworms when he was adopted, so maybe his lungs have been weakened.  I am careful with him when temperatures are below freezing. As Beth says, every dog is different and you need to be observant of your dog and adjust to the cues they are giving you.  Very young dogs and very old dogs also don't deal as well with temperature extremes, whether hot or cold.
