Gwenny's goodbye

It's been a long time since I visited this site. I switched to WheelCorgis after Gwenny was diagnosed with Degenerative Myelopathy. After two years, the symptoms had progressed to become a quality of life issue for her. We said goodbye to our brave girl on August 21.

Now for the part that the admins will not like.

Although most people believe this horrible disease (identical to ALS in humans) is a German Shepard/large breed problem, the fact is, it has become a real threat to…

Thanks

It's been 1 week & I still can't look at his picture without tearing up. His ashes were delivered in a beautiful walnut box yesterday. So fitting for him. The vets sent sympathy cards & I crumbled when I read their thoughts on what a special dog he was & saw the laminated paw print they included. Gwenny has been so quiet & Charlie just looks worried all the time. I am so grateful for the kind words & sentiments from all of you. I do believe he is just over the bridge &… Continue

End of the journey for Gandalf

Sadly, our dear brave Gandalf is gone. He got through 5 chemo treatments without side effects. It looked like his heart tumor was gone. The 6th chemo seemed to affect him a lot. He aged several years almost overnight. Last Sunday, almost 4 weeks later, he became listless with labored breathing & no appetite. All symptoms of congestive heart failure. A chest xray confirmed pericardial effusion (blood in the heart sac). With no vet available to remove the fluid until the next day, we decided… Continue

Gandalf

Even though it's only been 2 months since he became ill, it seems so long ago that this particular journey began. Everything is still going well for our 'old man', Gandalf. We chose the chemo option for his cardiac tumor. A treatment every 3 weeks which he has tolerated so well. No side effects or complications. Before his third session last week they discovered that the tumor has shrunk dramatically. So much that it was difficult for them to… Continue

'Sadness' update

Gandalf has rallied well since the last pericardial tap for fluid on 1/16 and has a growing fan club in town. A cardiology visit confirmed the heart tumor diagnosis. We are following recommendations and after meeting with an oncologist, he had his 1st chemo on Thursday. Their goal is to shrink the tumor and/or prevent spread to other organs thereby keeping him more comfortable over the next weeks-months. No negative side effects yet. He sleeps a little more than he used to but otherwise is his… Continue

Sadness

8 days ago, our dear Gandalf became ill. Listless, no appetite, trouble breathing. Our vet found a tumor in his heart. After two procedures to pull fluid from the heart sac we are going to a specialist next week. The prognosis is not good but he continues to rally and hang on.
