Do any of you have a microchip in your dog?

If you do, at what age did you have it implanted?

I am seriously considering implanting Blaze with one, just for the peace of mind of knowing if he ever gets lost, the chances are good for him to come back to us.

I found this website:

www.homeagain.com

and there's a vet close to me that does the implantation for $40.

What do you think? Good or bad idea?? It doesn't seem to hurt the dog, which is my only requirement.

Gwynnie's chip was NOT detected by the vet's scanner today.  8 y.o.  We have no idea how long this situation has existed.  Al's chip was detected immediately.

Mimi, our 7 month old girl corgi, just was microchipped last week when she was spayed. The cost was very reasonable at $10.00 at the SPCA. So, check around if you have a aniamal clinic or SPCA. She was under because of her surgery. I wish I had Dingo done now when he was nutured, but didn't know about it at that time. Good luck on your choice.

Good luck with Blaze's chipping, I hope that the prices you guys are talking about are similar in my area. I searched and once found a microchipping fee for over $200...that is outrageous for an injection of a chip that doesn't even come close to costing that much. I thought that must have been a mistake!

Oops. Didn't see the original thread on microchipping. SORRY!!!!! The information is SO helpful. I think we'll go ahead and do it either around the time or before Blaze gets snipped, since the vet that does the implant in our area isn't our primary vet.

Griffey is going to get microchipped when he goes in for "the operation" since he will already be under anesthesia. Griffey will be around 6-8 months when that happens. The vet told me they use a 16 gauge needle (about the size of a piece of rice, so pretty big actually) to implant the chip and it costs $55 and $18 for lifetime registration. It sounds a bit high to me, but this vet is usually pretty expensive to begin with.

Also a lot of people like to wait till their puppy is a bit older because of the chance of the microchip migrating down the back since they are still growing.

Kitty had her microchip put in at 14 weeks old.It was quick and painless, but, I dont remember the cost.Am glad I had it done,as it does give you a more secure feeling.

If my vet doesn't charge a ridiculous fee, I will have it done. There was a previous post about this and there are a lot of people on here that have their corgis microchipped. You may want to search the forums for this info. It seems they often tend to do it about 6 months, but some have it by placement time from the breeder. I think people are mixed on that part of it.
