Wow.. what did we get ourselves into

Sometimes I feel like the only difference between the child we don't want to have yet and the puppy we have is the blessed kennel we can leave him in while we are at work! We are having so much fun and thankful he likes to sleep through the night but talk about a battle of wills.

I'm pretty stubborn and so is Owen. I know that Matt and I are in charge but Owen is a strong willed little character. We wanted a Corgi because I grew up with a border collie and loved those but didn't want anything that big due to smaller quarters. My best friend had a corgi growing up and Oswald was probably the mellowist corgi there ever was. Our Owen is not but I think that is part of his character. So we are being patient and realizing that training is a process. Good thing God made puppies so freakin' cute because when they are chewing your rug.. not so much (that is what bitter spray is for.. *cheers*).

Anyway we are starting leash training and that is going marginal. He sits down ALOT and holds. Any help? Is he just scared and are we expecting too much from a 10 week old pup? Distraction has helped a bit, not really motivated by treats to move but the laser pointer helped tonight. I am wondering if he is just tired? How much exercise does he really need or are we overdoing it?

Owen's Schedule (and ours/mine)
6am awake, potty, etc and run around a bit
6:30am eat
goof off for a bit while we get ready for work
8:15 walk (about 8 blocks round trip)
last chance to potty
8:50 into the kennel
12:00 home for lunch, out of the kennel, potty, play a bit, eat lunch
12:30 today tried unsucessfully for a walk
12:50 back in the kennel
3:00 home from work, out to go potty, hang out play a bit
in and out as he needs to go
6:30pm dinner
between 8-9 try for another walk (8 blocks)

Hmmm... we are all about schedules.. :)

I suppose I could have mentioned that we do pick up at least half of that walk! Oh well.. We'll cool it for a bit.. I didn't want him to be fat :) and the first time he ran the whole time!

Sounds like you have developed a good schedule. I would say 8 blocks is a big distance for a pup so young. Temperature should be a consideration as well. Pups dont handle the heat as well as adult dogs. This may be the reason he is not interested in walking at noon time when it is quite warm in many parts of the country. Sounds like you are doing a good job.

Whisper went to work with me the first week, I had her (but she was an only child for that week). She slept in a laundry basket and the rule was if you woke her up, you had to take her outside. After we got her brother, they stayed at home and weren't bad for 6 & 7 week old puppies together. They used to rough house all the time but she has always been laid back and I think Owen will settle in. Remember he is a corgi and you are there to wait on him!

LOL! I'm loving your sense of humor. In puppy-land that will get you through a lot! That's a long way to walk for a little guy. But, I'm thankful you recognize the need to walk him! I would be a rich woman if I had a dime for every client who said they didn't walk because they played, or they didn't walk because they had no time...ad infinitum! Grrr! So good for you! Training is a process. Your Owen is old enough to get into a puppy preschool or training class. Please consider it. It'll be great time for the both of you. And you'll learn how to work with Owen's strong personality!

Harry is 4 months today actually and we are finally successful at two blocks. We tried for 4 and he was so tired by the last one, i almost wanted to carry him! I think we will stick with two blocks for a bit and slowly go further. We try to do two walks a day, but sometimes it is only one, but there is a ton of playing as well to keep him busy and going. Leash training was tough for us since the breeder never had him on a leash, but with practice you will get there! You should think about a puppy class, ours is great and we are learning more in class than we ever would have been able to do on our own! Good Luck!

Welcome to puppy mommy-hood! With your patience and sense of humor, Owen will turn into the calm happy dog that you remember Oswald to be. :)

Ten weeks is a little young to be walking that much. I only walked Charlie around the house and backyard until he had his last puppy shots at 16 weeks and then we started with one block. Right now, you can just let Owen drag the leash around some to get used to the feel and pick it up now and then and follow him around a bit, so he realizes that you will be on the other end sometimes and it's alright for you to be there.

Scheudules are great! Dogs feel more secure with a normal daily routine. Instead of walking you can start on fun things like sit, down, stand and other basic commands. Only a few minutes at a time on the training as Corgis get bored with too much repetition. Play with lots of his toys, so he learns the difference between his toys and your rug or your furniture. Also great to take time to touch him a lot, pets, hugs, kisses, coat brushing/grooming...and play with his little feet daily so that you can trim his nails weekly without him protesting. Those are good things for 10 week old pups, the long walks can wait a while.

This is a great time for you to bond and build trust with your pup. Sounds like you're on the right track to having a happy Corgi. Keep up the good work. :)
