How do I know when Ein is ready to go to a dog park? He still doesn't come reliably and I thought that was when you could take him to the park. But, I really want him to socialize more and I think it would be fun to go to a dog park.

Your pup is old enough to to the park. I took Malibu once she was over four months had her shots and done some puppy classes. If at all possible try to find a fenced in park that has a small and big side. The small side is normally for dogs under 25 pounds or into there senior years. The idea would be that the small side is smaller so no as much room to wander off and is a great place to meet other dogs. Once your pup is doing well on one side go to the bigger side but be causious as it would have big dogs. The dog park is great.

Most of the good ones do have a sep. area for small dogs and puppies. People bring younger dogs and they do well in there until they are larger and more socialized.

Tina, I'm so glad you posted this, what timing! Penny is 5 months old now and I had the same questions as you, since she doesn't have 'come' completely down yet. I did a little searching online yesterday and found mention of 2 fenced in dog parks in Portland(ME), so I might go check them out on my way home tonight. I've been thinking about taking her this weekend for the first time. One of them says it has separate small dog & big dog sections.

We always get his kennel cough shots......heck - they should be getting all the things we are talking about even if we weren't going to the dog park. We have 2 huge lots but Bucky does not see alot of other dogs. The dog park is his chance to learn - 2 or 3 times a week - just how dogs work in packs and how they take care of things among themselves.

Just let you dog loose in the park with the leash on so you have some control. Our Camber could care less about dog parks and is choosey who she "plays" with. A couple of sniffs and that's it. She like to play a little more in our back yard and she has a couple of friends she likes

She is a loaner in general and prefers older dogs or dogs that big and lazy.

yeah. bunni loves the dog park...she gets all slobbery and can't keep still just pulling into the parking lot. it's like disneyland for them. i think it's a great "neutral" environment for dogs since it takes away the whole territorial attitude. That's my theory anyways. My only advice is to make sure your pup has flea protection...i'm not talking about a collar, those things are a joke IMO. bunni got fleas from some mangy dogs there.

I've always gone to fenced dog parks, but when Range was younger he would always be off leashed and would just follow me. He even knew the command "COME". Until when he was a teenager, I swear dogs go through this stage, where they disobey you, chew up rugs and random things they get their teeth on. Then in that same age he was in, around 7-10 months, I let him go without a leash and he ran off and chased a cat, OMG I ran like a half a mile to get him, he was crossing streets, and everything. I disciplined him. I do this timeout thing, sort of the same way I potty trained him. Don't worry, just the tone of your voice they sense you're mad all ready, and they feel bad. SO he was on leash for the next month or so. Then I finally walked him to Fort Funston. He was on leash the first time. But I felt bad that all the other dogs were off leashed. So I tried it out, and just had faith in him and watched and walked closely to him. He's still a little stubborn when he's really curious about another dog, and it takes a while for him to realize I'm walking away. But that's Range.

Suse, Sidney would much rather play with the big dogs too. In his heart he IS a big dog! Those little dogs scare him, LOL!

Tina, the Burnsville dog park both big and small sections are fenced in in case that helps with your decision to take him there. And again I go quite a bit so if you wanted to go with me and Hunter, let me know and I will give you my phone number.
