How do I know when Ein is ready to go to a dog park? He still doesn't come reliably and I thought that was when you could take him to the park. But, I really want him to socialize more and I think it would be fun to go to a dog park.

Bucky has been going to the dog park since he was 6 mo. old and always the BIG dog park. Our little dog park is filled with mean nippers! The county made budget cuts and took away our attendant so a bunch of us took it over about a year ago. We buy chairs, kiddie pools, and toys. W even have a news letter! We also buy hoses for the spigots so that dirt goes magically away before they get back in the car! The original questions was what and when. Bucky comes everytime when we are out but in the dog park he forgets his name because he is having such a BLAST!

We only go to fenced-in dog parks. Both my corgi and corgi mix are iffy on "come" and maybe always will be. Corgis are stubborn that way! Once I took Bruce (the old corgi mix) to leash-free beach; he took off like a rocket and refused to hear my voice. I had to chase him SUCH a long way before I caught him! He was laughing at the great trick he played on me, but I was MAD. So no more leash free/unfenced for Mister Bruce!

We have lots of fun at dog parks and it is a great learning experience too.

Karen makes a great point about the dirt. This is Sidney after a fun day at the dog park:

I started taking Ginny to puppy playgroup at about 3 1/2 months after she'd had all her shots (including Bordetella). Then when she was closer to 4 1/2 months, we went to the dog park. She was timid at first and if she wanted to hide behind my legs, I let her. Also important to supervise to make sure no other dogs are bullying your pup.

Have fun! The dog park is a great place to expend some of that puppy energy!

What a good corgi parent you are for socializing him! =D awesome! =P

If he's still iffy on recall (a.k.a come), then I would stay away from un-fenced dog parks. Find a nice fenced in one and practice the come command often. Bailey went to his first dog park probably at 5 months (after the last series of shots), but I've heard that its safe as soon as the 2nd series of shots, but we didn't risk it.

Also, make sure you've got a towel in the car to wipe off all the dirt.. Corgis track up so much so easily!

We take him to a puppy play session at the local humane society and he has just about graduated from his first obedience class. We also have started taking him to a puppy day care once a week. So, he is getting socialized, but I think it would be fun for him to play a bit more with other dogs. I love seeing him happy and he seems most happy playing.

Make sure your corgis are up to date with their shots and you should be fine, socialization is crucial and should begin at an early age, go and have fun!

I took my first corgi to a dog park when he was 5 months old and my second one when I first got him at 8 months old. The dog park is fenced in with a double gate and so the dogs can't escape and even the best of trained dogs can occasionally not listen at the dog park. It is a place for them to be dogs. I think dog parks are great socialization and a lot of fun for your dog (granted people don't bring aggressive and unsocialized dogs). It happens from time to time. I had never heard that a dog shouldn't go to a dog park until a certain age. But that is just me : )
