Two weeks ago today, Brodie showed up in our yard, ready to help us do chores. In that length of time, we have gone from wondering how to find his owner, to being overjoyed he chose to live with us.
On day one, he chose to stay in our yard and 'help' us with the construction on my mother's house. As my mother-in-law and I worked on clearing out a fence row of brambles, he alternated between trying to pull out the branches for us and running through the thick grass in search of rabbits. Then, that first night, we left him outside, hoping he would find his way home, and instead listened to him howl and scratch to get into our house. We woke up Sunday morning to the screen door being torn off of our son's bedroom. It was becoming clear, Brodie didn't want to leave.
Now, he has woven himself into our lives completely. He sleeps under our bed, hops up happily into our truck to go on errands with us, and seems proud to display his rabies tag.
That first day, he tried to strangle himself when I put a leash on him. Now he gets excited at the sight of his lead because he knows it means we are going outside or for a ride. That first day, he was clueless about what to do with a ball or a toy. Now he makes great sport of collecting ALL the toys into one pile and daring Kadi to try to steal them from him. He proudly prances about with a bottle in his mouth, bringing it to me to throw again and again for him.
Can it really have only been two weeks?

Julia--I'm sure in the metro areas, like KC and St. Louis, there are some specific ordinances, but our state leaves that kind of thing up to local government and in our county we have very few regulations about anything. Some people think that's bad, but on the other hand it can be good. It is why we have mostly Amish neighbors. Generally speaking the dogs that show up here are either dumped or they do belong to someone close by and we can find their owners. It's been several years since we had one show up we couldn't reunite with it's owner--and that one was sweet too, so we ended up taking her to the Humane Society in the next county. However, since that time, that HS has changed their rules and their is a waiting list to drop animals off with them now! This guy fits our family too well to send him to a shelter. I was certain if I couldn't find his owner or keep him myself, that I could find a good home for him. We will probably never really know what his 'story' was, but we can certainly make sure it has a happy ending! :D
Yay that's so happy!:)
Brodie is so lucky he found you! You guys are lucky you found each other, actually :)
Chris, I just found your other post. It does sound like he's meant to be with you.
I'm surprised there's no laws about strays in your state. Where we are there is a 7 day stray period before we can legally become the owners of an animal. After that we can inoculate, neuter, test, trim nails, shave if necessary, clean ears, microchip, etc. Most importantly, we can adopt the animal out to a new, legal owner, and no one can come back and claim the animal.
Enjoy your new little best buddy.
Yes, we did all we could to find his owner. My hypothesis now is that he was somewhere with hounds or neighboring hounds and he was allowed to run loose (maybe chained up as punishment), he ran off hunting with the hounds after something large, like deer, and they abandoned him and he couldn't find his way home. However, with no collar, no ID, no chip, it was impossible for us to find his owners. We called all the area vets and have been looking at all the bulletin boards in the area and found no one looking for him. His nails were worn down and his hair between his pads was gone, so he had traveled a long way, I think. I even joined this site to post a notice about him, hoping if someone had been traveling across country with him, maybe they would look here or know someone here. But nothing.
Did you try to find an owner? I hope there's no one out there missing their missing angel. It sounds like you did, right?
