I am on such a rush right now! Ace and I just came back from a lovely first glance at an agility class, on a terrain about half an hour away by car. I have never wanted to learn how to drive (and own my own car) so badly until now - I want to go back!
We were allowed to drop in on a beginner's agility course, and eventually the trainer asked us if we'd like to have a go. I was so elated, I jumped into the ring without a second thought. Ace did extremely well on the long-line held by the trainer. He was very distracted at the start, but once I had his attention, he was making a beeline over the equipment. He was a little tentative about the ring-jump and the teeter (understandable; he's never encountered those before) but the jumps, A-frame, weave poles and high walk all went smashing.
In addition to showing great promise as an agility pro, Ace also met a ton of other, equally happy dogs and made a great show of rolling around in earthworms. I think this may have been his happiest day with us to-date. His tail didn't stop wiggling from the moment we jumped out of the car and onto the field.
I really, really hope that we can find a ride going from our city to this place. I have a good feeling that Ace has a lot of tricks up his sleeve with regards to being an agility star! :D

Sounds like Ace did really well for a first time. Murray never tires of it. I'm not sure we'll ever have it "mastered", but it sure is fun trying to improve all the time. I guess if we got to the point of me staying in the middle of the ring and directing him to a flawless performance, I would consider it mastered...not that that will ever happen. Our distance work is slowly getting better, but 10, maybe 15 feet is about as good as it gets right now.
You totally should. :) Ace was completely tucked out after interacting with so many new friends and focusing intently on me during the course. It was a great way to spend the weekend together!
How awesome! That sounds like lots of fun! When I get my corgi, agility's definitely something I wanna get into. Hope my dog will be up for it! Haha.
Aw darn, that's too bad about Waffle. :| Ace thrives off of being around other dogs, as he's actually a little lazy when he's just alone with me. He's not high-drive in the least, but being in a classroom setting makes him electric. Not necessarily hyperactive, but really willing to do stuff. The promise of being able to go up and intensely sniff other dogs keeps him eager to please. I'm quite lucky that he's come out of his shell socially just in time for these. :)
I love agility and wish Waffle loved it as much as Ace does! The whole class scene upsets him a lot. He loves the obstacles and working with me but being in class really bums him out and I think it's soured his perception of running courses. Definitely get Ace used to being in a classroom setting to avoid having a Waffle!
It is sooo worth it to go, and going with both will surely be twice the fun! I think I had an even better time there than Ace did, which is hard to beat! I love being in the company of "dog people" - they were all super friendly, helpful and understanding. Everyone greeted Ace in a way that let him feel at ease from the start, which I'd only expect from dog-savvy humans. :)
Good job Ace! Mid April, the Agility club of Evansville (by where I live!) is having a speaker, competition, and an invitation for owners to bring dogs out to try it. I'm planning to go with Scout but am really going to get familiar with some of the people so when "unknown new puppy" is the right age, we can go there.
You may have a little star on your hands :-)
:D! I LOVE agility. I love watching it in competitions, I love seeing it in person, and now that I've tried it, I'm totally hooked. :) I can't wait to explore it more with Ace!!
Yea Ace!! I love doing agility with Seanna. She caught on right away too, and sort of loves it. Once she had it mastered she really didn't see the need to do it anymore, but she obliges anyway!
