I could really use some advise for a problem that Lucy is having. We spent two and a half hours in the emergency vet clinic this morning because she was vomiting. Total, she vomited 18 times in an hour and a half. This isn't the first time we've been to the vet for this, but this is the worst it's been. We have been to the vet five times in the last month and a half for diarrhea and vomiting and everytime we go in she's happy and energetic so the vet says she's "healthy diarrhea and healthy vomting". I've switched her food twice but everything she's had is chicken and something so the ER vet suggested I change to something that she's never had before (like kangaroo, which I have no idea where to find it). Right now she's on Natural Balance Chicken and Sweet Potato, I was thinking of staying with Natural Balance and trying the bison or venison fomulas. I've also heard Trader Joe's dog food is good as well as a raw diet.
Has anyone else gone through this? Any advice is appreciated.

as a p.s. have you ever had a fecal done? Giardia and coccidia can also cause vomiting and diarrhea. Diarrhea is most common symptom but they do both sometimes cause vomiting if the infection is severe enough and both are hard to catch on fecals so you may get 1 or 2 negatives before you get a positive.
I agree with Jen that 18 times in one day is quite excessive even for a food allergy. Ask for a copy of the bloodwork and seek a second opinion somewhere else. There is NO such thing as "healthy" vomiting or diarrhea. Vomiting and diarrhea are both symptoms that something is wrong in the body, whether it be just a passing thing, small digestive issue, or something major. I would also see if you can get a copy of the x-rays. I would worry about liver issues, so have the second opinion check liver values as well as evaluate the liver on x-ray. If the ER vet was just looking for an obstruction, they may not have looked closely at other parts of the abdomen. Also, not all obstructions will show up on x-ray unless a barium survey is done so if she continues to vomit like this throughout the day and until tomorrow and has diarrhea then I'd take her in to a different vet and have them evaluate her as well. If it is a food issue, try to switch only one thing at a time, so since you feed chicken and sweet potato, try to get a food with say venison and sweet potato. If you switch more than one factor at once you won't know which one she was allergic to.
My Lucy had a good deal of difficulty similar to what you describe and the vet diagnosed it as a flu of some kind--all the vets in the area were seeing many dogs with these symptoms. The vet gave her a anti-nausea shot (and a few pills) plus a pro-biotic powder to sprinkle on her food to set her system right again. Lucy has been good ever since. (and the powder smells good to dogs apparently, encouraging them to eat)..
I feed Lucy Blue Buffalo (puppy kibble with a little it of canned or sometimes cooked chicken). My 2 cats eat Natural Balance canned and do quite well on it (they eat Blue Buffalo indoor formula kibble)
Has she continued to have problems or have they stopped? With what you describe, I'm not sure I would call that healthy.
Thanks for the suggestions! I am definitely keeping Lucy hydrated with water and they gave her sub q fluids at the emergency vet. I am actually thinking about getting a second opinion from another vet. Our vet seems great and knowledgeable but for the first month of this issue he kept telling me that she probably just ate something off the street that was making her sick. I was getting tired of that answer so I started asking people I know with dogs for their ideas which is where the food allergy idea came from. They did xrays and a blood test this morning at the emergecy vet and both looked normal so for right now at least it is looking like a food change is what we're going to try.
I know I've heard of dogs having problems with chicken, so perhaps that might be it? I've always fed Yuki and Ellie lamb-based foods (starting with Science Diet when Yuki was a pup and now with Taste of the Wild's Sierra Mountain formula.) For a food-specific bout of vomiting, though, that seems really excessive to me. I could see throwing up 3-5 times to empty the stomach, but 18? That seems a bit fishy to me.
Are you confident in your Vet's skills and knowledge? If you're comfortable with the care that you've been receiving, then maybe you could ask him/her to run some blood work just in case something is going on that hasn't fully shown itself yet. If you're unhappy with how your Vet is treating this, then I would seek a second opinion from another Veterinarian. Again, I could see a few bouts of vomiting as being a food issue, but 18 times is just too much for my own comfort level. I would think she would have been exhausted after that!
Also, be sure you get her to drink lots of water. With that much vomiting and/or diarrhea you'll want to be sure she replenishes her fluids to avoid dehydration. You probably were already told that by your Veterinarian, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to mention it again.
A year ago we had issues with Emma vomiting, sometimes every day. The vet said she was allergic to something in her food (after doing blood work). She was eating Science Diet at that time, now she eats Natural Balance Venison and Sweet Potato. Since switching her food, the vomiting completely stopped.
