I figure if the corgi can't do it on his own, I sure am not going to try it.
I did go out and purchase a collapsible dog bowl, though. Found one that telescopes on itself so it is wider at the top than the bottom, and won't close in on a tentative corgis nose. Austin will not drink out of those fold up kind.
Pretty sure Brodie would insist on being carried, while Kadi would be certain she could cross the Atlantic Ocean!
It's been interesting to watch the dogs learn routefinding and stream-crossing skills. Hesitant at first, they get quite good at it. In extremis, there is the "corgi toss" maneuver. A 6' bamboo pole can be handy.
I have come to trust them on log crossings, but some crossings are genuinely life-threatening. I have a belay harness, but it will NOT hold a dog suspended in a vertical hang -- Al slipped neatly out of it when I gently tested it! Might hurt a shoulder, too. http://www.mycorgi.com/photo/pacific-crest-trail-suiattle?context=user
Each of them has broken a stay and blithely crossed a log while I was on the other side with my back turned, getting out the belay gear.
You might try keeping that green water bowl inside the dogpack -- I worry about loose luggage throwing the animal off-balance, snagging in brush, etc. I like the Outward Hound collapsible dog bowl, weighs nothing.
This philosophy did not work for me. I ended up having to fish a very annoyed corgi out of a creek. Only use with sensible corgis.
The top pictures (actually crossing ) are Baker Lake Trail up near Mt Baker. It was beautiful.
The bottom pictures where the creek was actually deeper than it looks and we didn't cross was Mt Washington, near North Bend, WA.
We always err on the side of caution. I will turn back before trying anything that might be treacherous.
Austin does not like water that moves, even crossing bridges he is very tentative and needs to go down the middle. So to actual see him cross these streams with a little encouragement was kind of fun and a big step for him (7 years in the making).
Just be careful! Once Waffle was creek-testing and almost went over a waterfall. I grabbed him but dang, it was scary!
