Another hike..and this time, a coyote! And a piece of corgi art...

Boy, it seems on each of our hikes lately we've encountered another creature! This weekend we did a 5-mile hike at an area called Daley Ranch here in San Diego. It's a huge complex of trails through some pretty oak groves and chaparral.

About 2 miles in, I spotted an animal ahead of us on the trail, just trotting along. The view at this area was a long flat meadow, so we could see there was nobody else in sight. It was definitely a coyote, our for a walk in broad daylight! I was concerned that he would turn and run at us, but he kept trotting in front of us. Sidney didn't seem concerned at all. I kept thinking about Jessica Simpson, and how her little maltipoo was taken by a coyote right in front of her. I held back a little to see what the coyote would do. Then we saw a jogger coming towards us (coyote in the middle) with his dog. That was enough to send that coyote into the brush and out of my sight. I was nervous going past the spot where we last saw him. Sid sniffed the area, but didn't seem agitated at all.

Sidney at the spot the coyote disappeared:

Here's an old windmill; I thought it looked cool:

A shady spot to have a drink of water:

Sid was a real trooper, and did the five miles without complaint. He would never have done this over the summer, so either he's more mature and able to handle hiking, or the cooler weather helps immensely! He was tired by the time we got to the car, and he slept all the way home.

Sidney on the trail:

And finally, I was at an art & craft fair a few weeks ago. I saw someone selling dog prints, and I just had to get this:

It was so cute, and it's the spitting image of Sidney :)

Beautiful pictures thanks for sharing. I must admit the coyote is what attracted me. I keep wondering what the heck I'd if we were to stumble on one or worse yet a pack.

Last year just a mile from the house a family lost their border collie and a lab next door was seriously injured. I won't go into the horrible tale of the incident. Here on the east coast the coyotes are much larger and even with 3 corgi's I fear them. Animal Control told the folks it was a coyote attack. Glad the critter you saw kept moving on.

Aw, that print is adorable, I love it! I think it would be cool if Sidney's name was written on the little dog bone below the picture. :)

Sounds like fun! We have coyotes in the park land behind our house but they are very shy and I only see them in the winter in the marsh next to my house. My kitchen has very big windows that look out at the marsh. I love the cooler temps as much as the corgis!

Sounds like a great adventure! My corgis love the cooler temps and are much more active. As for the coyote...a single one will be much more cautious and it almost seems like he was out enjoying the weather too...it's when they're in packs at night and call the dogs (yes, they can disguise there voices to sound like pups crying) that's a problem. Beautiful pics also!

What a great print! Someday my goal is to do a stained glass corgi!

Sounds like a great hike! I think a full-grown Corgi is probably a bit much for a single coyote to take on, but I would have been nervous too, especially after that story of that folk singer who got killed in Canada. The huge majority of the time, though, the coyote will do just what you describe. I know we have them here but I've never seen one up-close.

Love the print! Sounds like a great day. Hiking season has wound down here and we missed the bulk of it due to bad weather.
