Anyone have experience with "Halt" the dog mace?

I just bought some on Amazon.com. It's supposed to be citronella based instead of pepper based which hurts less and is just as effective. There are a few people in our neighborhood with scary dogs, like the pit bull owners that used to live across the street I blogged about, that think it's ok to have their dogs off leash. I think it's an ego problem when you think you are so in control all the time that leash laws don't apply to you. We've also had a problem with another neighbor with two very large scary looking American Bulldogs. Both dogs have come charging out of the house when the wife left the door open to bring in grocerys. I started freaking out yelling for her to get her dogs and of course she apologized saying they were friendly. "Charging" in the dog world isn't exactly friendly behavior. Anyway, since then I've noticed the lady STILL leaves her door open to bring things in from the truck and her husband regularly takes the dogs, off leash into a park I walk by all the time with my dogs! My dogs are under 30 lbs and I don't let them off leash unless it's a secure area. I know if they see one squirrel or rabbit all that listening to my commands go out the window. Do people really think their dogs are ALWAYS without fail going to listen to their commands? So anyway, I bought the mace because of this problem. My dogs have also been confronted and sometimes attacked by a nasty Boston Terrier that escaped it's yard, a fox terrier across the street, and some small mixed breed brown dog that got out. These are just around my neighborhood. We go on walks twice a day so I know it's bound to happen eventually. With the small dogs I'm not as afraid because I think my dogs could deal with that if if came to it but pit bulls and Bull dogs-no way. The second time that Boston Terrier got out and attacked my dogs my husband kicked it so hard it did a back flip (forgive me for not feeling bad about that). We haven't been attacked since. I wish people were more responsible. Anyone ever used this "Halt" stuff? Does it work? My dogs are like my kids and I would gouge another dogs eyes out if I had to to keep them from being killed. I just hope it never comes to that. I"m no Dog Whisperer-I need all the help I can get!

We live on a military base and I just found out we can't have pepper spray on base anyways. So I guess I'll have to be satisfied with the citronella based stuff regaurdless.

I almost bought the real mace but I heard this was the stuff the mailman uses. I HOPE it works as well as the real stuff. I plan to latch it to my bag I carry with the dog's stuff when we go on walks so people can clearly see I have it and hopefully keep their dogs in the house. If I ever do have to use it I'll be sure to post how well it works and if it doesn't I'm getting the real stuff. Knowing my luck I'd spray it and it goes right back in my face or my dogs! Better than sitting around waiting for something to happen though-that's for sure.

Using citronella instead of mace to protect yourself sounds like using a squirt gun instead of a real gun.
When you really need protection, you need real protection. Mace is a weapon. A nonlethal weapon, but still a weapon. It hurts, but not as much as a bullet or a lawsuit or a court-ordered execution of a dog.
It might help to inform your neighbors that you're afraid of their dogs and are carrying mace to protect you and yours. Important to keep this message nonjudgemental and nonconfrontational and on the level of your feelings (fear). You're not telling them they're irresponsible dog owners; you're telling them you're afraid of their dogs.
