Just Kidding!!! I'm not really giving up my sweet girl, but I'm frustrated enough with her this morning I'm feeling that "I'm about to put you out on the street corner with a sign that says 'take me,;" feeling that I used to get when Sky was little and naughty!

This morning Lyla was having lots of fun playing in the rain. This made it harder than usual for me to get her in from outside. (She is hard to get in on an average morning, today it was impossible!) I refused to chase her because she's too fast, she would win, and that would just reinforce running. I also didn't want to break out treats so she thought that if she was bad long enough mom would eventually just go get some good treats.

I usually just go inside when she does this and she'll come to the door, crying and wanting to be let in, but this morning she was not playing fair! Finally she went potty and I squatted down and started my over the top "Good potty Lyla!" party. She came running over for her petting and loving and I reached out and grabbed her. She squealed like a little pig.. not because she was hurt, but because she is such a drama queen sometimes! I know it was a low-down trick, but I was 30 minutes late to work thanks to her, and getting rather wet out in the rain. I just hope this doesn't regress her potty training or make it harder to bring her in next time as she tends to hold grudges against punishments like that! Oh puppies....

hi there, i found that having a pup on a leash and a designated potty spot works best. and i use the cue "get busy" to let them know that the purpose for this trip outside is potty time. but it also sounds to me that she needs more time outside if she is reluctant to return inside. best of luck! kim & bruce

We do the same as with Tucker, rewarding with a treat after going potty. It was a boon for the two older dogs when Sidney came along because they got rewarded right along with Sid. It's funny how they race to get back in first and all three sit in front of the treat carton and STARE until I get there. LOL

Tucker always runs right inside because I give him a healthy but yummy treat every time we come back in from going potty. Rather than calling and calling then finally offering the treat- hence rewarding the bad behavior - I offer the treat up right away rewarding the pottying. After he goes potty I say good boy and all that - then say want a treat? in a very excited voice and he jets for the door waiting for me to let him back inside for his reward. He doesn't get a treat when he doesn't go potty or when we are just outside playing but he usually comes right away when I call him (probably hoping for a treat).

Tucker loves the drama too. He cried and squealed so bad at the vet when they tried to give him a shot - before anything even touched him. They took him in the other room as to not upset me and the dr came back in and assured me that despite what it sounded like they were not trying to kill my dog.

BTW, Heidi isn't a squealer...but my last one was. so i know exactly what y'all are talking about! *grin* glad i lucked out with a quiet one this time, it's quite startling when they do that... :-D

Heidi used to be pretty bad about her recall but I did clicker training with her very briefly (briefly b/c it did not seem to work, or i did not understand how to expand it, for anything else) - and that was the only time back then that i could let her off leash and know for sure that she'd come when i called. b/c of the initial click-and-treat method, she started associating coming to me with getting a treat, so now even though i don't use the clicker any more, she still comes very reliably and i make sure she's rewarded somehow (petting and praise are sufficient these days). just a thought. good luck with your little stinker! i know just what you're going through!!! ;-)

Does Lyla have a favorite toy? maybe a squeeky one? puppies (and dogs) don't like to come when they know that that ends their fun! would you? I know I didn't when I was a kid (still don't, come to think about it)-when you are not rushed, call her in with a treat or toy, then say "Release,go play" and send her back out to play-do this as much as you can-when you need to leave and she doesn't come, GO get her! don't call ,and again, end her fun-also you should get a better response if you run from her and let her chase you-she is a herding dog after all and they do love to do that! also make grabbing her collor a positive thing by rewarding her when you have hold of her collar-start by putting your hand on the collar from underneath(reaching over her head will cause her to duck and avoid your hand) and holding a treat to her nose at the same time-treat goes away,as does your hand from her collar-practice and work your way up to top of her neck and holding her collar-good luck and have fun

Yes where did they learn this from because LO squeals like you're killing him. I have watched Rexx when he is in his moods with LO and he doesn't touch him, just scares him but he squeals. Big drama queen LO is.

Beni does this too-- the whole drama queen bit. Squeals, but it really doesn't hurt that much. I guess it runs in the family. I wonder where they learned it from. I solved the problem somewhat by taking him out on his leash instead of letting him run free. It really helped!

Lyla is precious! Our Corgi has issues with his recall as well. He is 11 months old and is now a teenager. You know how those teenagers can be. He has been snappy towards other animals lately as well. He is possesion agressive. We will continue the hard work on that. Good luck with your pup! I just wanted you to know that you are not the only one with the urge to put your pup on the curb. Hard work and patience pays off.
