So my little fella decided it would be a fun treat while I was cleaning the bathroom to snack on a pack of gum. Of course it had to have xylitol in it so I induced vomiting and had to take him to the ER. There'll be a pill he has to take and I have to feed him at four hour intervals for the next 12 hours but hopefully the little bugger should be okay. Good thing I caught him pretty quickly afterwards. Apparently dogs can have come serious side effects like a diabetic coma or liver failure. Yikes!

Thanks for the well wishes. Bartleby's luckily been acting his normal, nippy playful self today, much to my relief. I'm just glad that part of the wrapper was left on the couch. I can only imagine what would have happened had he consumed the whole thing : O.

Andrea De Leo : I'll check out that list. If there's not enough toxins to watch out for your dog, it scares me they're sticking xylitol in more and more products. It seems so easy to accidentally expose your pup to something fatal.

Its amazing how many dangers are out there given how corgis eat like goats

Glad to hear you caught it right away.  We too went through this with Lance when he was a pup, about a year old.  He got into my daughters new school bag, that she had just gotten for Christmas.  Luckily I was aware that it is toxic for them.  Off to the vet we went with Lance and he too spent the night overnight.  Thank Goodness he was ok.  We had to take him back a week later and have his liver enzymes checked which too came back ok.  I remember watching his every move after he came home for signs of seizures, but luckily that didn't happen.

Hope Bartleby is ok.  I won't buy anything with Xylitol because I heard that even a tiny bit can be fatal.

Glad he's ok, what did you use to induce vomiting.

When my Romeo was 10 months old he went into my purse and ate about 7 sticks of gum Containing xylitol!

Luckily I too noticed right away what he had done!

They tested his glucose levels every hour.
Also they will took x-rays and gave him IV fluids.
All it takes is 1-2 sticks of gum to be toxic!

Glad to hear Bartlby is gonna be o.k.!!!

READ the following for more info about what xylitol can do and what it is in....

Xylitol is in many things besides sugar-free gum!

Way to be on top of it mom!!! Good job! We had a little corgi in last summer who's owners were making homemade toothpaste, she ate a whole bag of pure xylitol. Landed her in the ER for 2 days with a blood glucose test every 2 hours!

Oh wow, he's so lucky you caught him right away!  I never would have thought that gum would be dangerous in that way (I always thought it blocked their digestive system.)  It makes me doubly glad I don't chew gum.

Poor Bartleby! It is a good thing you caught it right away. I don't have any experience with this but do know it's dangerous!
