I don't remember our previous Corgi ever having a cold... but I have found out dogs do get them!
Last Sunday evening Bogart clearly wasn't himself. Instead of being right under foot in the kitchen he stayed in his bed while dinner was being prepared. His nose was warm and I took his temp - first time - with a special digital thermometer I got at PetSmart. He didn't fuss about the temperature taking (in the behind) and it was 100.2, which is (from looking it up) within normal range. Appetite was normal but he just had no energy and even the tennis ball (his favorite toy in the universe) did not excite him. I had also noticed a lot of snorting, sneezing and reverse sneezing going on the few days prior.
Out of an abundance of caution, took him to the vet and had both blood test and fecal test done. The vet said most likely a cold, or perhaps allergies, and the tests came back fine. He prescribed Benadryl for five days.
I'm happy to report that he perked up after just 24 hours and has pretty much been his normal, playful self the last few days. The Benadryl, of course, makes him a little sleepy but he is still very alert (and following our every move in the kitchen, and watching golf and his other favorite - the show The Big Bang, on TV). :-)
The dosage for Benadryl is one MG for each pound of weight, so since he weighs 25 lbs, he can have one 25 MG tablet every 8 hrs (according to the vet). However, I only gave him a tablet every 12 hours.
When his symptoms are gone, we will get the Bordetella vaccination (Kennel Cough) since he has been spending lots of time playing with dogs at the park.
Regarding my other concern, that he was eating "stuff" off the pavement, we have amended our walking routine and I now make sure his head is up while we walk. If he tries to eat something I just give a little yank on the leash and say the words "head up" - it really only took two days for him to get the message that asphalt licking is NOT ok.
He does have a cute quirk of picking up a pine cone on the way home and bringing it all the way to the front door (where I ask him to "drop it"). Then, the next time out for a walk, he will pick it up as we leave the house, and take the pine cone for a walk for a few blocks, before leaving it somewhere. This happens over and over.
