Just tell them your concerns about his back and I'm sure they would be willing to do neurologic tests for you. They ran a full panel on Waffle. The tests include moving his foot so he is standing on the top (he should put it back to normal immediately), testing his reflexes with the hammer thing, and the spine touching test. There are probably more but I don't know what they are. If all else fails, just ask if they can check for back pain. I was at a vet school, but I'd imagine it's easy enough to do.
