My New corgi pup tends to nip at us everytime we want to bring her inside, or everytime we pick her up. She is 9 weeks right now and this is my first corgi I've owned. I was just wondering if this was just regular puppy behavior, corgi behavior, or is she trying to tell us something... what should we do? (You can tell that its different from play biting) I dont believe in hitting a dog or any animal.

THANKS!

The best thing that worked for me was to totally ignore Maggie when she started nipping. I would either turn my back to her or walk away completely. She hates that so she got the message real quick. I tried yelping like a puppy to tell her she was hurting me but it only excited her more and made things worse.

The thing that worked best for Gibson was me yelping and then pretending to cry curled up in chair so he couldnt get to me..it showed him 1. that biting hurts and 2. that biting leads to play time being over.

The "yelp and turn away" method (remember to yelp like a puppy, high pitched and sharp) worked very well with Sidney. If she is doing this when you pick her up, make sure you are not accidentally hurting her when she is being lifted. I notice sometimes Sidney will make a move as if to nip when he is worried about being hurt...he thinks better of it and stops himself but its almost like the instinct of self-preservation kicks in initially, and training halts it.

Consistency should have this behavior stopped quickly. Good luck!

Our breeder told us that if they try to bite (or nip) when you are trying to pick them up to pick them up and put them in your arms upside down until s/he relaxes. Shows them you are alpha.

Saddly it is normal puppy behavior to try to establish domanance. She is trying to be the alpha dog and it is pretty important that you/y'all decide who is going to be in charge around there. I am a firm believer that there is a time when a fly swatter is good for something other than flys. Of course Bear never need that!

yep! sounds like a corgi to me....they are nippers when they are pups. We found by using a very LOUD "NO" or "OUCH", that helped to curb Spencer's nips...they need to be taught what is acceptable.
