Can we get Camber to like other dogs?

Here's the dilemma. Mo and I want to bring another dog into our family. We've been doing our research and have been establishing contacts and all that stuff. However, I worry that Cam may not acclimate to another dog.

The confusing issue is that Cam came from a house with 7 other dogs, yet when she meets another dog on the street, she could care less. We already know that our new dog must have a calm demeanor, so puppies are out. We want an older dog. Part of the reason is that we think that it will be good for Cam to have a playmate. That she should have another doggie friend. But, is it the best thing for her?

When we go onto petfinder.com, we see dogs that are listed as being in households where they should be the only dogs. I wonder if that's Camber? I would hate to bring in another dog and not have it be the ideal situation for her. We know of a breeder who is looking to place one of her older dogs and we are seriously considering visiting her with Camber and see how they react to one another.

Camber's attitude, if the dog isn't excited, is one of avoidance. She goes to her corner and just lays there. Maybe she will touch noses with another dog, but then goes to her corner. I need some advice. Will Camber adjust because she has no choice? Should we enroll her into doggy day care so that she can learn how to be with other dogs before we adopt again? Any advice would be helpful. Thank you all!

Thanks for the advice. There will definitely be an adjustment period, so we may be jumping the gun making assumptions about her bahvior. That being said, Cam should definitely get into a training class. Now, we just need to find a trainer who's not a kook, like our last one. Will keep y'all posted!

You asked great questions Elys! It is definitely a good idea to go to puppy class, the more socializing you do the better. Different corgis have different personality, some just loves to play regardless of age, some are more chill, I have both :) In my opinion, I don't think Mocha and Vienna are the best match, yes, I know! This comes from me and you're reading it right. I think the best match I've seen was Vienna and our last intern Skippy, they both have the personality that compliments each other, they are happy when they're together , you can just see the joy in their eyes. Mocha gets very excited, play and do very well on the first day of meeting any dogs, however, that excitement usually wears off the next day. I just accept the way he is.

In my opinion, for a new comer to settle in takes 3-4 weeks, with good rules and some work, that's when the pack begin to accept one another. Just like human family, there are differences and it takes time to work things out. Camber may be perfectly fine by himself, give him a good chance to see if he does well in puppy class, re-evaluate and see decide then, I think you'll get a better picture then. Good luck!

Thanks! I think we'll just keep exposing her to other dogs in the hopes that she'll just get used to them. I think she's too attached to us--can't be healthy...

LOL I understand. You did say she was slowing making friends at the dog park though, right? It sounds like once she's around another dog for longer than an hour or so she'd be just fine. Good luck!

She definitely doesn't know how to play. But, she's playful with us. She likes to chase us around and FRAP in the yard. She has play potential! She only bares her teeth when another dog gets too close and sometimes she snaps, but she snaps at the air, you know?

It sounds like she would probably do ok with another dog given some time. She's not aggressive to the other dogs she meets it seems so that's good. Maybe she just doesn't know how to play?
