I recently adopted a 6 year old Male CWC.  Recently, he will walk over to a peice of carpet I have in the kitchen and scratch at it.  He won't lay down after, so it does'nt seem like he is fluffing the carpet.  Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks!

Thanks everyone for the responses!

Max scratches with his front paw.  One at a time, never both.

Front leg or back leg digging? Jackson does it with his back legs after he pees (would do it in the house when he marked after he first came to live with us), but does it with his front legs on the carpet to "make his bed" before he goes to sleep.

Henry does the same thing, usually in our bedroom. Sometimes I think maybe he's just doing it for attention because he knows we'll get out of bed to tell him NO! when he won't stop. Sometimes he'll even do it when he's underneath the bed though, so who knows. It is a little strange.

There may be a particular smell in the carpet.  Try an enzyme type cleaner like Nature's  Miracle and see if it makes a difference.

My Schatzi does that too. I think it's just a digging instinct, she does it in her bed as well. I just try to reinforce that it is an unwanted behavior (telling her no, and giving her something else to play with). Or just getting him outside more often so he can burn some energy!
