Going to pick up our puppy in 6 weeks. First time dog owner. We will also be going to see the litter when they are 5 weeks old. At what age (weekes)can you tell what color a corgi will be? Thanks for any info.

I was able to tell by 11weeks tht my corgi was going to be a red/white. His mom was red/white but his dad was a tri-colored. My corgi had some black fur initially but it faded away over the weeks.

Thanks for all the info, especially Jen for that useful link. We go to visit the breeder in 2 weeks to pick one out from the litter and then 3 more weeks to actually take it home. My kids are counting down the days., We go puppy supply shopping this weekend - any suggestions on any "must have items"?

I believe the BHT is a recessive color, so yes the puppy could end up as a BHT even if neither of the parents are. I really doubt your kids will care what color he is once they actually have the puppy though. :)

The mom is sable and white, and the dad is red headed tri-colored. We are probably going to be getting a pup that right now looks mostly black with some white, is it safe to assume that he will probably be a red headed tri colored corgi like the dad? My kids do not want a black head tri colored one, is there a chance that he could be a blackhead one if neither of the parents are one?

Renfield is a red/white, but when we picked him up at 6 weeks old he had a lot of brown in his coat and I thought he would be sable. Even my vet put him down as sable for his first check up. He didn't start to really look red until about 12 weeks old. Now at 7 months, there is no hint of sable in his coat.

When it comes to whether or not they'll be red/white vs. sable/white, I'm really not sure.  You might find this link useful, as it shows some pictures of puppies and how they look now, as adults.

If you're looking for how to tell if a pup will be red head vs. black head, you can tell by looking at the inside of the ears.  If there's black at the tip/inside rim of the ear, then the pup should be a black-headed tri.  If it's red inside of the ear, then the pup should be a red-headed tri.  As to how much red or black a red-head would retain, that's anyone's guess.
