Seeing as this is my first post I will explain a little about myself first. My name is Ashley, I am 21 years old and live in WI with my boyfriend (Joe). I am currently going to school with a major in Biology and a minor in Wildlife Ecology, what am I going to do with that you ask? I dunno, hopefully something at least science related! Anyway, I have had dogs all my life. When I was younger we had Shetland Sheepdogs, then as a preteen we had German Shepherds. When I was about sixteen and living with my parents I got a Miniature Dashund (Reginald). I've always preferred big dogs, but my mom insisted I couldn't we couldn't have another one. My plan was always to bring Reggie with me when I moved out. Well, the first apartment I lived in didn't allow dogs. The second place I lived was more of a townhouse and I tried bringing Reggie over. Unfortunately he was used to having playmates as well as a big fenced in area to run around in. He just couldn't adapt to being on a leash and not having any friends to romp around with. Sadly I had to bring him back to my parents, where I can still visit him at least. Ever since then I have been waiting for the right opportunity to have a dog once again. My boyfriend and I specifically looked for a place to live that would be dog friendly, and we found the perfect apartment! We moved in at the beginning of May and it has been wonderful. Our apartment is somewhat separated from all the others, you have to walk around to the opposite side of the building from the others to get to the door. My favorite part is the large beautiful deck that goes down to a large grassy area behind the building. AND we are right on a large pond so we can watch eagles from our gravity chairs lounging on the deck. Thanks to my obsessive craigslist checking and a little luck, we finally found a place where we can get a dog.

A Pembroke Welsh Corgi wasn't an obvious option initially. There are not any breeders in my immediate area for one th ing and I imagined the price would just be ridiculous. Not to mention I REALLY wanted a big dog. However, common sense won out and I knew that having a large dog in our apartment (even though it is quite spacious for an apartment) wouldn't be a great option. I used to work at a Veterinary Clinic and knew a woman there who has three Pembroke Welsh Corgis, so I thought just for the heck of it I would ask her where she purchased hers from. A day later I had the breeders email in hand and decided to just send him an email to see what happens. Well, he replied within a day and informed me they would have a litter ready in the middle of June! That seemed absolutely perfect, Joe and I would have time to settle into our apartment and we could buy all the necessities for a happy healthy puppy. I am officially picking up our little guy on June 12th and the wait is KILLING ME! We've chosen everything from a name, to the puppy collar, to the adult collar!  The breeder is to send me pictures today, so of course I just have my email up on a tab waiting (and ignoring all my responsibilities like working out...). All the puppies are try-colored and that is basically all I know right now. I really want to go there with an open-mind and choose based on the personality, but truth be told I would really prefer a red-headed tri. Although I read that red-headed tris are dominant to black-headed tris so that shouldn't be too much of an issue. Either way, I know we are just going to fall in love with this puppy instantaneously and I am looking forward to training him to be a wonderful playful friend. I am contemplating training him to be a therapy dog as well! We will see though, probably shouldn't get ahead of myself :)

I have trained a puppy, I actually was the primary trainer when my parents would get a puppy even when I was 11 years old. I actually started working at the Vet Clinic when I was 11 so I definitely have experience! Unfortunately I haven't been able to visit the breeder prior to picking up the puppy because he is 3.5 hours away from where I live and between work and a summer class it's hard to find a full day for a day trip! Joe and I are definitely trying to be organized. Luckily my summer class will be done by the time we pick him up so I will have lots of time to spend watching him! Thanks for all the advice!! Once I have pictures I will definitely post them :)

So, you have dog experience.  Have you ever trained a puppy?  You have 12 days to get your training plan together.  If, Dog forbid, I ever find myself with another puppy, I will be much more methodical and organized about the training:  notebook, calendar, schedule, list of commands, criteria for success, puppy classes, etc.

You have visited the breeder?  If not, I'd highly recommend that!  You do have the recommendation from the person you know, but you still have time to back out on this breeder if you see any red flags.  There are numerous discussions here and elsewhere about choosing a breeder.  This is an important decision you'll live with for a long time; don't get caught-up in the heady emotion of the moment.  Do your homework, and get ready.

You also have 12 more days to surf mycorgi.com.  There is a lot of information here; but spread out and hard to collect.  Check the FAQ.

I am soooo excited for you!  Nothing like getting a puppy!  I love the name Zorro!  I am sure you will just fall head over heels in love with him.  We have two corgis, they are almost eight years old and they are the light of my life!  Can't wait for you to share pictures and stories with us!  Congratulations!!!!

Welcome to corgihood!  Corgi's are perfect because they ARE big dogs, just in a little body!!

Thank you! Oh haha I should have mentioned the name! We are naming him Zorro. Originally we were thinking of going with Link (from the video game Zelda), but Zorro means fox in Spanish so we thought it was relevant and cute :)

Congrats on everything going so well for you. My son is also majoring in Biology/ Ecology. He hopes to work with wildlife, too. He and his girlfriend will get Dolly when they can move to a place that they can have a dog (and time for one!). Fortunately, Dolly is content to just sleep all day and so moving to a small space won't be an issue for her. Snickers is a RHT and is adorable. What are you going to name your puppy?
