I would like to know about the weight issues that the corgi breed has because I do not know if my dog is in good health or not. I'd like to get to know your corgi's weight to gauge mine and what the official book says on corgi's health.

Ein weighs 32 lbs last time I checked and he is long for a corgi. I am just curious of everybody else's corgi.

i think that royal canin does cost a lot though... I want to give him full meals but i'm not there yet. If i post up the pics, can you guys tell me what you think?

i recomend royal canin calorie control high fiber. I feed ein 2x a day 1/8 of a cup. as recommended by my vet. Ein walks 2-3 times a day, and because of the cold, not for long. When the weather gets better we walk for a really long time sometimes. I have to check his weight again but he's still active and happy. When I cook food, I give him extra veggies to fill him up. can somebody check my corgi's pics to see how he looks"? I should take a pic of him as i hold the fat on the back of his neck. lol

Sidney is 29 pounds, not thin but he does have a waist. He's 3.5 years old.

Ein is 17 inch length and 11.5 inches at shoulder height.

Jane,

Could you recommend a specific brand that would be good to give them? Also, how much food would you give them per day?

As said by others it really depends on the individual dog. I try to keep my dogs fairly thin and Henry is usually around 27 lbs., I think he's very average sized.

@ Alison and Jason, I would switch to a large breed puppy or an all life stages formula for their food. Puppies usually grow about a pound per week when they're young, so 4-6 lbs in two weeks is definitely a lot of growth. On another forum I visit a long time pem breeder said she never recommends a super premium puppy food because the puppies grow so quickly it can cause health problems as they get older. Slow growth is better for the dog in the long run.

Breed standard is 10 to 12 inches at the highest point of the shoulder, with length from point of shoulder to base of tail being 40% longer than height.

32 pounds is big if your Corgi is standard height.  That said, I have one that is perfect at 36 pounds but he's also 13.5 inches high at the shoulder.  My other is perfect at 28 pounds and would be an overstuffed little porker at 36.  She got up to 30 and was noticeably chubby.

You should be able to feel ribs easily, but with Corgis that can be misleading because you can still feel the ribs on a chubby Corgi; they tend to carry weight along their topline and over their loins.  The chest should be much bigger than the waist.

Brody is definitely a bigger corgi.  He's usually around 30 - 32 lbs and actually when down closer to the 30# his ribs are showing.  When we were at the corgi meet up he was definitely a little longer and taller than the others.  Lil' bit is a little bit smaller and usually around 22#.  OUr vet says they are both at a good weight.

Hi Everyone, I am also wondering about Corgis and obesity. My family and I have two Pembrokes - both brothers. Mac and Rascal are both18 weeks old. We got both of them two weeks ago and when they came to us Rascal weighed 12 lbs and Mac weighed 16lbs now Rascal weighs 18lbs and Mac 20lbs. Is this a lot of weight gain for two weeks? We were giving them 2 cups a day split into three meals of Blue Buffalo but our vet recommended Royal Canin, which we are currently giving them. The breeder mentioned that this was a lot of weight gain for them and to cut the food back to 1/2 cup three times a day. Since we are currently in the process of house breaking them we do give them treats when they make outside (a little bit of turkey or a piece of dog cookie). Can anyone give an idea of what18 week old male Pems should weigh? We are thinking of giving them carrots and a little bit of their kibble as a reward in order to prevent weight gain, however, my concern is I do not want to under feed them. Thank you.
