Ollie went to the vet yesterday for his 8 week post-op check-up. In May, he was neutered and had some stitches put in his left eye for a pretty nasty case of "cherry eye". Thankfully, we were able to have both procedures done at the same time to save Ollie from having to go under anesthesia twice. (It was also more cost-effective!)

The surgery came and went with no problems. Ollie's eye looked almost normal as soon as it was over. We elected to have some blood work done the day of surgery just to make sure he was in good shape. At his appointment yesterday, we were told that is ALT (liver enzyme) was elevated to 135 (I think normal is up to 60). They took more blood and ran the test again to compare, and it was higher than the day of surgery at 158. They wanted to place him on a supplement to detoxify his liver and check the level again in a month. I can't seem to figure out why this would happen! Could it be congenital? Worse yet, I fear that he has gotten into some sort of toxin that hurt him. There are too many possibilities to count, so we are going to follow the doctor's orders and see how he does. He has, so far, been asymptomatic, but we will continue to watch him for lethargy, yellowing of the eyes, gums, and skin, and vomiting or diarrhea.

I know nothing about liver issues in dogs, so I certainly can't offer any new information. However I can imagine how scary it is to get bad lab results for your four-legged friend. I hope all turns out well.

I work with a woman with a Yorkie who has high liver counts, and apparently it's not uncommon in that breed. He's not at all sick, but they do watch it.

I hope you have answers soon. Best of luck.

elevated alt yuck! I had a lab that had multiple issues in his latter years the most frustrating was this one it prevented so many things that could have helped from being given to him. alt elevation is a big scary thing! we were on a 4 month blood work schedule to monitor it. In our case it never came down.
