Our little boy has Kennel Cough. I feel like the worst mommy ever. When we enrolled him in daycare, we were asked to provide our vet's name so that Ollie's shot records could be obtained. When I didn't hear from anyone, I assumed we had everything we needed.

Last night, Ollie woke us with a tremendous "HACK"....that isn't even the best word for it. It was a terrible sound. He kept doing it and spitting up froth and slime. I laid on the couch with him for a few hours, stroking his head and promising that I'd take him to the vet as soon as they opened. I felt so helpless.

When we got there, Ollie produced a huge slime puddle (the biggest yet, in fact) in the waiting room. The receptionist said "Is that why he's here?" When I answered that it was, she asked us to wait outside in case he was contagious. That's when I thought....oh no...KENNEL COUGH. I'd heard about it and I knew there was a vaccine for it, but....oh NO!

Sure enough, when the doctor saw us it was confirmed. Ollie was violated with a thermometer (fever of 104) and given subcutaneous fluids, pain medication, and antibiotics. Now my poor baby looks like a zombie. That pain medicine threw him for a loop! He has to complete a 2 week course of oral antibiotics.

I am so glad we found this early, but I feel like I let him down somehow by being ignorant about his vaccines. I hope he starts to feel better soon...his ears are so droopy. (They always seem to be an indicator of how he's feeling.)

Poor Ollie! Don't beat yourself up! I remember when Odie got it from the neighbor dog - I thought I had let him swallow a leggo or something, husband gone (of course!) and such an awful sound!! The recovery was amazing. He had to stay home from doggie daycare, I felt bad, but I don't think he even noticed. Good luck to you Ollie, feel better soon

Kennel cough is a broad term for canine URIs, and is very common in crowded quarters. In the shelter where I volunteer, all dogs get the Bordatella vaccine, but that can take a while to work, and only covers some cold bugs. Add the stress of being there, or in a kennel, and the dogs still get sick. They are isolated and given antibiotics immediately.

The good news is that in a home, away from stress, it is not as serious. Recovery is much faster and easier, usually not requiring treatment. My two both came home from a good kennel with colds. I didn't even recognize the sound of a doggy cough, it's not something you hear very often. The young corgi had some amusing sneezing episodes (her chin hits the floor when she sneezes:)), but Old Dog just got sicker and sicker, even stopped eating. But both recovered at home. Old Dog needed a close eye on him, and my finger on the phone buttons, but a young healthy dog will generally recover well at home.

I'm sorry Ollie got it so bad.

And, for the record for the rest of us, if you think your dog has kennel cough, tell the vet staff before you arrive and ask if they want you to enter through another door, or to let them know when you arrive. Where KC dogs go, all must be sterilized in their wake.

Hope Ollie is all better very, very soon & his ears are back to perky! I'm wondering if you might want to check with your daycare about their process to verify that dogs have all of their vaccinations. Kennel cough is yucky & I know Ollie still could have gotten it even if vaccinated, but I'd be concerned about the daycare's lax follow through on vaccines in general...

Yeah, I work at a dog daycare and kennel cough is the worst. Everyone that comes in is required to have the vaccine, but some still manage to get kennel cough. Poor little guy, he will be better soon!

I know exactly what u mean. Teddy just had that a few weeks ago but don't worry its just like a cold that we get. He will start feeling better after a few days:) and like kelly said even if u did have the vaccinatiion for it he still could of gotten it. When u sent a pup to day care its like sending a child to school. They come home with all sorts of nasty bugs. Just make sure he takes it easy and gets lots of water and he will be fine:)
