Oppy's just over 10 months now and we've been starting to trust him more and more being alone while we're gone. If we just had to run to the store, we've been testing leaving him out of his crate, and he's been very good. Over the weekend we went up to Hilliary's parents' cabin, and while there we went to the Bloomsburg fair. We decided to try to leave him out there while we were gone. We were gone about 9 hours and we came back to no accidents or anything destroyed! The only thing is that he might have been distracted by their bulldog, they love to play together. Today we decided that while we're at work, we could leave him out. Since the two of us have offset schedules, he'll only be alone for about 6 hours. Today's the big test, if he has no accidents, I think we can start leaving him out full time! He just recently started sleeping in bed with us (and has been sleeping great throughout the night), which is a big step up for him. We're so proud of our little boy!

He pulled up the carpet a couple months back in our last apartment, but that phase seemed to only last maybe 2 weeks (thank god, he did a number on the carpet there). He generally doesn't chew stuff that isn't his (except for socks and a soft coaster once).

That's great! Has he ever been one to chew things that are not his? I know some people say their puppies would chew the furniture or the carpet. Finn tried to pull up the carpet when he was only 2 or 3 months old but he's never tried to destroy the furniture or even stuff we leave laying around like shoes, books etc.

Well I just got an update from Hilliary, she just got home and he made it the whole day without any accidents or destroying anything!

Yeah Alice, that's how we started. Then we steadily increased the time we'd be away. Only a couple more hours till we find out how he was.

Congratulations! That is a big step. We've been testing Finnigan too. We leave him for 15-20 minutes while we run an errand and when we get back he either sitting in front of the door or laying on the tile. He's been very good but we have not been brave enough yet to leave him for hours. Hope Oppy keeps up the good work. :)

You should give him a present today if he's a good boy :) It's always nerve wrecking those first few times lol. Especially suppressing the urge to rush home and check on things.

He really hasn't destroyed too many of our things. He mostly just likes to kill his own toys.

Very good boy! Some dogs are just like that. I have had very few things wrecked due to a dog being loose in my house!

Yeah, most of what I've read says to wait until about 1 year, but he seems to be very very lazy when we're not around, so that's why we're willing to trust him a bit more. So far he's been proving himself worthy of full run.
