I am new to MyCorgi.com and fairly new to the Corgi breed. Gretzky is 7 yrs. old. Someone recently told my husband that Corgis get unusually grumpy as they age. Is there any truth to this?

Also, a couple of months ago Gretzky didn't want to go for a walk and didn't want to down the two steps to get in and out of our house. I believe that he might have jumped off of our bed and hurt his back. I am VERY careful now - lifting him in and out of the car and lifting him up and down if we nap on the bed. He seems fine now and loves his walks but I am very aware now . I won't even let him go up and down our basement steps.

Any comments on either of these subjects?

I have only met one elderly Corgi. The breeder where we got Jack had an ancient female who had been on long-term steroid treatment for some condition or other and as a result had basically broken down in all fours. She was to the point of having joint deformities, but she still got around well enough and still had a happy glint in her eye. And she was as sweet and friendly as could be. They said she would tell them when it was time, but right now she was still enjoying life.

Many elderly dogs get a bit cranky if they are in pain. I don't know if Corgis are really that different; a well-socialized dog of course will tolerate a lot more than one who was always iffy.

Lily is 10 years almost 11 years and yeah she's a grumpy old woman now I would say. But I think that has more to do with her arthritis and back pain. She wants to be around the family but pretty much wants us her leave her alone otherwise because it hurts too much for her.

My first corgi seem to get less tolerate of little kids as she got older, but then again, she was never really around kids that much. If the kids were around 5 years old, she didn't mind them, any younger, I would put her in another room. The little ones were always after her ears, or nubbin, which she didn't like.
Jumping off a bed would be a big no-no I would think at Gretzky's age. In fact, at any age, with their long backs. I lift Duncan in and out of our car as much as possible, don't let him jump out. Since he isn't alllowed on our bed, I don't worry about him on that note. The furthest he has to get off of something is the couch, and even then, I try and make him more or less "ease" off the couch for a better word. No big leaps off.
