So my husband and I made a trip to the local humane society this past week, and we were so sad over the amount of pets being turned over because of the economy! It breaks my heart that people have to surrender their pets due to the inability to feed/care for them. Yesterday I saw a video clip on CNN about a place back east that had started a pet food bank to coincide with the days that the regular food bank was opened. I thought to myself...I wonder if I could do something like that on a smaller scale? Right away I fired off an email to the local humane society and asked them if they had any programs in place to help financially disadvantaged senior citizens (I thought this would be a good group to start with) feed their pets. I received an IMMEDIATE response from the director who said that they were currently trying to find a way to start a program and she would love to meet with me to discuss some ideas! I'm really excited about this opportunity and I couldn't help but come on to mycorgi.com and spread the news! With the economic situation the way that it is there are so many pets out there that don't have a voice and that kills me. I'm hoping that my husband, myself, and Cowboy will be able to help pets stay with the owners that they have bonded with, rather than go to a shelter. I'm starting to spread the word around work, and I've already had a few people tell me that they would donate food!! I will keep you all updated on how the program goes, my first meeting with the humane society is on March the 6th. I encourage all pet owners to keep the pets who don't have homes in their hearts, minds, and prayers, and wish us good luck on this new journey we're about to emBARK on! xoxox Cowboy, Matt, and Tabby

Today there was a story in the paper about this and I am going for it too. I will gather some info and start with the Humane society as Mountaingrrl did.

Neighborhood groomer ("Doggie Style" -- not making this up) collects for the pet food bank.
I met a rescue dog taken from an indigent. Not getting fed. That is HARD! Down on your luck, and somebody comes and takes away your DOG?! Even if it's for the dog's own good, that is cold. Wouldn't it be better just to feed the dog? Sure, it ain't a white-picket-fence, but being a homeless person's companion might not be the worst life for a dog if your basic needs are met. Out-and-about with a loving companion who needs you.
There's been a guy living under I-5 on my way home for over a year now.

I've been thinking of a new song. "Animal Shelter Blues". Anybody wanna help? Many traditional laments could be reworked to a lonely animal's point of view:

"Hang me, oh hang me; I'll be dead and gone.
Hang me, oh hang me; I'll be dead and gone.
Wouldn't mind the hangin', boys; it's bein' in jail so long,
I been all around this world..."

AWESOME!!!! Brilliant idea. I applaud you. Do keep us posted. Here's another thought. How about contacting pet stores, heck any stores that sells pet products to have a donation bin like toys for tots. Collection bins at Vet clinics, groomers, doggie daycares, signs at dog parks to get the idea out there and get people to volunteer. Any one in forums or blogs could post information. The news would spread fast.
