Hey everyone,

My husband and I decided to get a second corgi, and felt like a 1 year old boy would be a good addition. We now have a almost 2 year old fixed boy (Rhys), and the addition is a 1 year old unfixed (tomorrow is d-day however) boy (Beau). Our new boy has been home since 7pm last night, and although the two aren't fighting, they also don't seem to be overly entertained with one another. Occasionally, the new one will whine when my 2 year old approaches him, but that's it. Is there something we should be doing to engage their play? Is this normal? Will it end after the neutering? Any help would be much appreciated!

Thanks! Sarah

You can buy something called a belly band if the marking is really bad. Basically a boy diaper lol. Or you could try leashing him to you. Neutering helped with Luke's marking quite a bit.

Nope.  He'll quit peeing when he's marked everything he thinks he needs to.  Jackson marked everything here, and in my mom's house.  Now that he's been here a while, it's not an issue anymore.  We still love him...:-)

Thanks for all your advice guys. One more question... Beau is trying to mark everything in site. He even peed in Rhys' crate when i took my eyes off for a second. We are doing the nature's miracle thing, taking him to his own spot to pee, and distracting him and clapping when he tries to mark. Anything else?

Give it time.  Don't force them.  We took Jackson in last fall, and him and Seanna have just gotten to the point where they initiate play with each other.  They still spat sometimes (rarely) over toys, but it's taken them this long to figure out where they are with their relationship.  Before they would play as a group, but not just the two of them.

Give them time. One is in a new & strange place. The other has had his turf invaded. After Beau gets back on his feet again (which shouldn't take long) start walking them together or playing fetch together...group activities & lotsa luv'n.

Hi Sarah, yes it is normal, no it is not related to neutering, testicles are never the root of any problem.

There are proper techniques to introduce 2 dogs in a household, usually in a neutral place, you can find many old discussion on this topic.

Generally it takes 1 month for 2 dogs to reveal their true self to one another, longer to figure out each other's boundaries. Just like human, some dogs are social butterflies and can be everybody's friend, some takes longer to get used to, whatever it is, your dogs will learn to live with each other.

At this point, you should have a family meeting with everyone in the household, make sure everything is on the same page with food, feeding schedule, pee / poop schedule, discipline techniques, exercise / walk schedule. What they dogs needs are solid structure, exercise, discipline, then affection, in that order. Now that you have two dogs, you must walk them both daily outside on leash for 45-60 min daily, most behaviour problems can be solved with exercise. Remember corgis are herding dogs, they need to be challenge mentally and physically everyday.

From my fostering experience, I'll say 1 out of 12 dogs are truly bffs, others are simply roommates that learn to live with one another.

Hi Sarah,

Congrats on the new addition!! Beau is just getting used to your house and routine, eventually Rhys and Beau will start to play more, and more.  We adopted Tucker a little over a month ago and they played alot and then all of a sudden didnt seem like they would play much, but they are back to playing again.

At first when we brought home Tucker we would let them spend time with all of us and then give Tucker some quiet time on his own in the kitchen.  Hope this helps. Oh yeah, and after you get Beau neutered you will need to keep him on the quiet side so the stitches heal, so a quiet place for him to go and relax will be good.  :)
