One summer afternoon, Jerry went missing, sending our family into an absolute panic. We called all our neighbors, we walked all around... no Jerry. Then about 8:00 at night we get a phone call. Well, it turns out Jerry was picked up by the dog catcher. We drive over to pick up Jerry. The animal control officer takes us over to a cell - yes, an ACTUAL cell - occupied by one small (although don't tell him that!) dog.
Jerry was just sitting in the cell, with his stubby front paws together like he always used to do, smiling and looking quite contented with himself. We paid his bail (a whopping $5) and took him home.
Of course after that, we never let the dogs out unattended. Now Jerry is in his now forever home, having crossed the rainbow bridge this spring, after a long struggle with DM. He was a great guard dog, and I'm sure he does his rotation by the pearly gates... but if he does wander, I know he will be just fine...
I miss my Jerry.
