Very sad.  Is a necropsy being performed?  I once had a cat which seemed perfectly fine in the evening die while I was asleep.  She was relatively young and appeared to be in good health.  After necropsy, it was decided that she suffered a heart seizure due to cardiomyopathy which is essentially undiagnosed heart problems.  I would imagine the same is possible for dogs. 

Again, very sad to lose a furry friend at any time, but unexpectedly is very, very difficult.
