Hi everyone I just wanted to share this funny story...
My dogs sleep in the bed with us (all you naysayers just hush we like it! to each his own ok?)
anyways, the Beagle (Galoot) likes it under the covers, the Corgi (Pengu) likes it above. Galoot freaks out if anyone climbs on her while she is sleeping under the covers.
Before Pengu came if a kitty climbed on her she would start barking wildly out of a deep sleep and scare the crap out of the kitties. (yes we let the cats sleep with us too if the mood strikes them) Anyways, one time Pengu was all sleepy and changed positions on the bed in the middle of the night and she stepped on the barking mine that is Galoot under the covers. It scared her so bad she was shaking!!
That is a big deal for Pengu 'cause she is bossy, tough, alpha girl! So ever since then if Pengu wants get on the bed in the middle of the night she stands on the chest at the end of the bed and whisper barks to wake me up.
This so funny 'cause when I was a kid I would do the same to my mom.. It's like..."mom..3 seconds...MOM...3 seconds...MOM!...mom, are you awake?" She does exactly the same using a whisper bark. I can't get her to whisper bark ever!!!
Anyways then I have to pull all the covers over so she can see the sheet and make sure Galoot is not there before she will get on the bed. She won't climb on the covers even if they are totally smooth and flat until I lift them up and she can see the coast is clear. GOOFBALL! It is such a funny thing to wake up in the middle of the night her looking at me like "is it safe?"
Anyways, that's my story thanks for letting me share..
By the way, how do you teach whisper bark on command?

Bertie only has a big bark (and a beautiful singing voice too -- we often howl the theme to Lassie while riding in the car), but Ethel does what I call a "burp bark." When she's lying down, with her head flat on the floor or pillow, she does a little woof without raising her head -- which makes her cheeks blow out and flap a little. It's very funny to watch. And years ago, I had a little dachsie (named Tootsie Roll -- well, I was younger then) who loved to sleep deep under the covers. I used to worry she'd suffocate, but she refused to sleep anywhere but at the foot of my bed UNDER all the sheets, blankets, etc. Go figure.

Great story!!
I've tried the inside voice thing, too. None of mine will bark when I say that, so I'm guessing they don't think they have inside voices, only full-throttle big barks!

aww that is soo cute. Romeo is still a baby. He barks like crazy and when he's excited or when he wants something. How do you teach him to HUSH. LOL. when i tell him to hush, he barks and barks. Also how do you make your dog sleep with you?!? I put him on my bed to sleep with me, but than he jumps down and sleep on the HARD WOOD COLD floor near the makeup table T___T i want him to sleep next to me

Great story! I usually have 2 of my 5 on the bed... and yes they do sometimes growl if they are "disturbed" Wynn does the whisper bark in the am but I wish he would at other times instead of his usual loud obnoxious bark!

I tell Corie 'in-door voice' and she softens her bark, its funny!
Yeah, she sleeps with us too, and if we move, she growles at us!! She hardly ever allows the cat on the bed, but if she does, she is usually sitting on one of us... they truly are such funny little dogs!

Ohhhhh, the whisper bark! I had forgotten all about that. My beloved Ladygirl was very vocal, almost ear-piercing, especially when I was on the phone and she wanted attention. There once was a commercial of a woman moving her fingers like a duck bill opening and closing and saying "Use your inside voice" to a Jack Russell. I thought it was a hysterical commercial for that part of it, but I tried it with Ladygirl -- guess what? It worked! She had that adorable "whisper" bark, and she knew if she asked nicely she would get what she wanted because it was so cute. However, if I ignored her too long, she reverted back to "hollering" at me -- LOL! Anyway, your story is wonderful -- and I'm not a naysayer. I also sleep with 3 Corgis in bed every night! They're great bed warmers in the winter, and there's nothing like sleeping next to a snoring Corgi!

Hahaha, that's such a cute, funny story :) Corgis are so smart!

Ein doesn't bark unless he's outside chasing away birds and wild bunnies in the backyard. So I wouldn't know how to teach the whisper bark.

My Dh has just recently allowed my little boo boo to sleep with us. The bedroom was Rexx territory and LO refused to enter. Now LO has become a little more wussy less and fights back he is no longer intimidated by Rexx. In fact just the other night he heard Rexx enter the bedoom (he is still cautious) and growled at Rexx when he came near the bed, I thought it was funny.

That is so cute! I would like to teach a whisper bark too since Sparty is such a big mouth. LOL We have a bedtime ritual too and a king size bed so we all fit! At first we did not let the dogs sleep with us just the cats. Then my husband talked me into the dogs too. The cats have now left for the living room couch (a little too crowded for them). Izzy jumps into bed every night but Sparty (because he never used to be allowed) will wait on the side of the bed until I lift him up. Under no circumstances will he jump in. Apparently since during his formative years it was not allowed he can not be convinced it is ok now. They are fun even if they are bed hogs!
