I have started to notice a problem with Lola's bed time habits. Now she sleeps in bed with me mainly because I have a big enough bed, love her company, and don't mind my own personal space heater at night. However, lately I have been waking up to a strange sensation every morning at about 5:45-6:00. Now, in my half asleep state I realize that Lola is wide awake shaking like crazy, like she's terrified of something. She shakes so hard, and so far I just can't get her to stop.
I'm worried that during the summer while we were going through living arrangement changes that she ended up getting a little traumatized. I spent some time staying at my father's house and one morning at about 6:00 the garbage truck stopped in the alley right outside our bedroom window. It was really loud and startled her terribly. So now I worry that she may be afraid that the sound may come back.
Normally I work about 40 hours a week and that often involves a night shift followed by a very early morning shift. So when I get a chance to sleep a couple extra hours I take it, but with Lola's shaking it wakes me up and keeps me up so I have no choice but to kick her out of bed for the last couple of hours. I really hate to do this because I know that she must just sit on the floor shaking by herself waiting for me to wake up. I want to find a way to correct or redirect this behavior so I can keep her with me all night!
Please help! We are both losing a lot of sleep over this!

Just got back from the vets office. They drew blood which made Lola cry so it took everything I had to refrain from swooping in and saving her. Her results came back ok but they said there were some slight changes in her liver results. They aren't sure if it's a congenital disease or if her blood sugar just gets too low at night. However, they aren't going to rule out that it's an attention thing she has going on. Since I had already fed her though, she couldn't accurately test her blood sugar, it was normal but a little on the low side of normal, but we are going to fast her Thursday night and go back at 8:00 Friday morning. I hope none of her litter mates are going through problems.

Yeah I think I'm gonna have to wait this blizzard out. And unfortunately I'm not even home right now and may be stuck here for the night. At first I was thinking that she may be cold but I do have a space heater that faces the bed so I keep it set to keep the room about 68-70 degrees at all times. I even sleep out of the covers sometimes just to make sure it's a comfortable temperature. But we're gonna work on the diet and I'm gonna keep an eye on her until I can get her to the vet.

Gosh, I'm glad all we have to cope with here is a little 118-degree heat and the occasional blinding, suffocating dust storm! Be safe...better to let the dawg shiver another night or two than risk both your lives on an icy road. If the shakes were life-threatening, you'd know it by now.

Say...uhm...  There's no chance that the problem could be that the dog's cold, is there? Okay, i know...that's prob'ly stupid. But Cassie sleeps on top of the covers on my bed. At this time of year (I don't run the central heating -- beyond one's budget on Social Security), if I wake up in the middle of the night and stick my arm out from under the comforter to pet her, her fluffy coat is COLD. If Lola's fur is fairly short & smooth, could she possibly be getting chilled in the wee hours?

I hope so, but I will brave the weather if I have to.

I know the weather has been really challenging. Hopefully it will let up soon.

Yeah I'm gonna set one up. It's just being a little difficult right now since there's a blizzard going on right now.

All the advice about feeding is well and good, but I would not put off the Vet check.

Lola does tend to seem fine and her normal self throughout the day until that time every morning hits. That's when she starts to act weird.
