So today, while I was putting groceries away, Ginger found a piece of Extra Sugar-Free gum, which contains xylitol. When I found her, I could only find half the stick. I panicked and called the vet. They told me to bring her in right away so they could check her out and induce vomiting. It normally takes almost half an hour to get to our vet and I think I made it in 15 minutes. They gave her the stuff and we waiting for her to throw up. They found a couple itty-bitty pieces of gum. The vet said that the amount she ingested wasn't enough to cause a bad reaction. However, she also threw up a ginormous piece of a rawhide. We watch her very closely when she has them, but apparently she decided to swallow a big chunk whole this morning. The vet said had we not induced vomiting she probably would have ended up with a blockage. I love our vet, and they love Ginger to death, but I'm getting sick of seeing them. We've been in 3 times already this year and I've spent more on medical care for her than I have for myself! Too bad I can't use my flex spending account on her :) Long story short, she's just fine, and I'm glad I took her. Now I'm going to throw out all of my sugar-free gum, excpet my Trident. Trident doesn't use xylitol. And her rawhides.
