My regular vet called today and suggests running a bile test on Sally to test for the shunt. It's actually a pretty simple blood test, and I'm hoping it will give us a better idea of what's going on.
In the meantime, Sally is begging to run around and play, and doesn't understand why I won't play with her. I've bought her a ton of chew toys and the like to try to distract her and keep her occupied until she has the go ahead to run run run.

I know, it's been so tough... but I do appreciate him being thorough. I think he wanted to tell me that she was ok, but also wanted to be sure because he couldn't quite explain the small elevated bile acids. I'm actually pretty relieved at the moment, and am very optimistic that she'll be ok. He's going to get back with me again tomorrow.

OK.. so the vet just called and said that the toxins were elevated in the tests, but not as high as they would be for most dogs with a liver shunt... so he's sending the tests off to a specialist to see what he thinks, just to be sure. This is good news!

Christy,
I'm sorry to hear about your dog. I'm not sure how everything is going to turn out for Sally or what kind of complications she could have, thank you for the info on Pancreantitus, just like all doctors, even vets can leave out things that owners should know (I don't blame them... it's an amazingly tough job and it's just as much our responsibility to educate ourselves)... and sometimes it's hard enough just trying to ask the right questions.

I've never had a pup with a shunt but I had an older dog who passed a couple years ago and his liver was failing him we did these same test's every 4 month's, the last couple years, draw blood(test for enzyme levels),feed, draw more blood(recheck enzyme levels if it was clear enough) the vet would always show me the after food vile toward the end which heartbreakenly would look like a stawberry milkshake(which meant the liver was not processing just dumping things straight into the blood). He was on a prescription LF food and also had no treats given since he was susceptable to Pancreantitus which he did have one severe bout that darn near killed him....I don't know if your pup would be at risk for some of these same things?? due to a shunt??. I hope your pup feels better =)

Thank you for the information! I've been doing a lot of research and hadn't heard that information about shunts showing up after a spay. I didn't really connect that much together, although I did kind of figure that she has been showing symptoms for awhile (looking back).

I'm mentally preparing myself for the possibility that it is probably a shunt. Of course, I'm hoping that it's not. Did your puppy turn out perfectly ok, or was it maybe something else?

I looked on your website as well... you have BEAUTIFUL dogs!
