Hi everyone, just wanted to let you know that we have decided to listen to our breeder and return our 12 week old corgi to her.  She's also the rescue coordinator for new england so she's either keeping him, or placing him with another experienced corgi person after she spends some time evaluating him.  We're heartbroken, but the dog just isn't happy here and so far hasn't brought us any joy because of all that.  It just didn't work out, wans't the right fit, and he'll be happier somewhere else.  I wanted to thank you for all your support and insight.  It really factored into our decision.  Good luck with all your corgi's!

I think finding the right  match is so important. If you didn't feel that connection in the few weeks you had him I think you made a wise decision in re-homing him. With Franklin I knew immediately he was "the one". He had all his puppy antics and lots of bad puppy behaviors but I looooooooooved him despite all of that. Fast forward 3 years and now I have Kirby, the connection just wasn't there within the first few weeks while he was settling in and now we are 6 months down the road and it looks like I will probably end up having to re-home him. I think your heart will know when you found the right pup for you and your family, don't give up because of this one bad experience! Good luck!

Marcie, when we got our second Corgi Maddie, we were also offered a four-month-old pup who was kept for showing but her ears would not go up.   So you are right that sometimes puppies fall seemingly from the sky when a week before no one was available.  Our breeder had a pup come back once because within two weeks of going home, a child in the family developed a dog allergy that was not present before.  And so on.  (By the way, the pup whose ears would not go up is now showing and winning, so I guess they held onto her after all!)

You made a brave decision. When you are ready you may want to check the Mayflower website. There is a link Other Dogs Available. Often there are some older puppies or retired show dogs here (none right now). I was on my breeders waiting list for a young puppy and then saw her post about Becca there. Becca was 8 months old and the breeder had decided to show a sibling instead. I went to meet Becca one weekend and picked her up the next. Her personality was easy to observe (though took a bit to come out once we got home), she was housebroke, but still had plenty of puppy attitude. You breeder may know of other such puppies if you are interested in that route.

I'm sorry to hear it didn't work out! I was really hoping things would turn around for you, since your puppy sounded so much like my Ace at that tender young age. I pray he finds a good home down the line!

Are you planning on trying your luck again with a puppy?

Thank you for doing the right thing for yourself and your puppy.  Please be prepared for some very negative reactions from some people in the real world, but know that you did what was best.  This is very unusual behavior for a Corgi pup and I wonder if he has something wrong with him.  His breeder will best be able to reassess him and place or keep him accordingly.  I know it's hard but I hope this does not sour you on Corgis.  Again, it is not typical for a Corgi puppy to be so shy that he yelps when he meets people; they are generally fairly outgoing, cheerful dogs and it's very unlikely you would have a similar problem (or any other problem) in the future.  Ask the breeder if she can keep an ear out for you; on the show circuit, they all know who has pups on the ground and in this economy, buyers sometimes fall through at the last minute.

Do use a mild bleach solution to clean  all your puppy stuff out of an abundance of caution.  And thank you again for having the courage to do right by the little guy and yourself.
